Juventus Pursues Zirkzee as David's Future Wavers
The idea started as a whisper around Continassa. Now it has weight, numbers, and a green light from Manchester: Juventus are moving with intent for Joshua Zirkzee.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Bianconeri have received permission from the Red Devils to explore a loan deal for the 2001-born forward, whose two-year spell in the Premier League has never really taken off. Zirkzee, nostalgic for Serie A and openly keen on a return, has given Juventus his full availability. The door is open. Juventus are stepping through it.
David on the brink of a passing of the torch
This potential arrival does not exist in a vacuum. In Turin, every move in attack now seems to circle back to Jonathan David.
The Canadian’s early withdrawal in a friendly against Chelsea in Hong Kong felt like more than a simple precaution. It looked like a symbol: a summer in which the No 9 shirt might quietly change hands. David’s position grows more fragile by the day, his future more uncertain with every call from abroad and every meeting in the Juventus offices.
He wants to stay. After a disappointing first season with just eight goals, David’s aim is clear – to prove that the prolific finisher from Lille is still in there. Juventus respect his professionalism and attitude. But the chance to bring in Zirkzee on a straight loan, with no obligation to buy, could tilt the internal debate decisively.
Massara’s calculated gamble
At the heart of it all is Ricky Massara, the sporting director installed at Continassa and now working the phones with familiar urgency.
He knows this player. During his time at Roma, Massara had already tried to bring Zirkzee to Serie A on a permanent basis. That attempt failed; this time, the conditions are different. Juventus have limited financial room after committing heavily to Randal Kolo Muani, agreeing a €38 million fee plus €12m in guaranteed add-ons with Paris Saint-Germain. One big outlay is already on the books. Another is not an option.
So Massara is pushing hard for a pure loan, no strings attached. No obligation, no automatic triggers, just a year to test Zirkzee at the heart of Luciano Spalletti’s project. From the club’s perspective, it is the ideal formula: upgrade the attack, protect the balance sheet, keep flexibility for future windows.
He sees this as an opportunity Juventus cannot afford to let pass. And he is acting accordingly, accelerating talks with United to lock in the terms before rival clubs or late-window chaos complicate the picture.
A different kind of forward for Spalletti
Zirkzee is not a classic penalty-box striker. That is precisely the point.
Spalletti, a coach who thrives on fluid, interchanging attacks, would gain a forward capable of dropping between the lines, linking play, and orchestrating moves at high tempo. The Dutchman showed in his Bologna spell that he can operate as the technical fulcrum of an attack, combining physical presence with subtle touches and vision.
He does not live solely on goals. He builds them. For a Juventus side that has often lacked creativity between midfield and attack, that profile has obvious appeal.
Yet the move cannot happen in isolation. The domino that must fall first is David.
The David dilemma
David’s stance is firm: he wants another shot in Turin. One season, eight goals, and a sense of unfinished business – it is not the legacy he imagined when he left Lille. He believes he can still become the main man at Juventus.
Inside the club, there is genuine appreciation for his attitude and work ethic. No one doubts his professionalism. But football at this level is unforgiving. When a loan opportunity like Zirkzee appears, on financially favourable terms and with a coach eager to work with that type of player, tough decisions follow.
A serious push for Zirkzee would inevitably force David to confront his own situation. Stay and risk reduced minutes behind Kolo Muani and a new arrival? Or accept that the cycle in Turin may be ending after just one year and look elsewhere for a central role?
The answer to that question will shape Juventus’ attacking structure for the season ahead.
United talks heat up, backup plans on standby
In the coming days, discussions between Juventus and United are expected to intensify as Massara tries to finalise the agreement. The framework is clear: a straight loan, no obligation to buy, and a chance for Zirkzee to relaunch in a league where he has already shown he can thrive.
Until David’s future is resolved, though, Juventus cannot close the circle. His decision – or a decisive offer for him – remains the key that unlocks the deal.
The club are not walking into this blind. If negotiations with the Red Devils were to collapse late in the window, Juventus have already sketched out contingency plans. Several forwards at Chelsea are being monitored closely, including Nicolas Jackson, Emmanuel Emegha, and Liam Delap, as alternative options to reinforce Spalletti’s front line before the market shuts.
For now, though, the path is clear. Zirkzee at the centre of a new-look Juventus attack, David weighing his next move, and Massara racing the clock. One loan, one exit, and the entire shape of Turin’s season could change in a single week.
