Julian Alvarez Weighs Arsenal Move Amid Atletico's Firm Stance
Julian Alvarez’s future is hanging on a knife edge, and the decision, according to Spanish journalist Pedro Morata, is due today.
For weeks, the message around the Atletico Madrid forward was clear: Barcelona or nothing. Any other route was shut down. Now the door to north London is suddenly ajar.
Morata reports that Alvarez is “open” to joining Arsenal, even if the player still carries serious doubts and has little desire to return to England. The internal balance, as it stands, is said to be 55 per cent in favour of staying put in Spain, 45 per cent towards a move to the Premier League. That split alone marks a dramatic shift from the earlier stance that only Catalonia would tempt him away from Madrid.
Arsenal push as Atletico dig in
Arsenal have already made their move. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Atletico’s director of football Mateu Alemany flew to London recently for face-to-face talks with the Premier League club. The Gunners’ opening offer is substantial: £103 million plus £4m in add-ons.
Atletico’s response has been blunt. They want around £129m.
The Spanish side are prepared to negotiate, aware that a sale could help fund a move for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres. They see Alvarez’s potential departure as a chance to reshape their attack, not just cash in.
The numbers, though, remain the problem. Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has previously insisted they would not entertain bids of €150m or even €200m, and while the current asking price underlines a willingness to talk, it also shows they have no intention of being bullied into a cut-price deal.
Tense atmosphere in Madrid
All of this is playing out against a backdrop that is turning increasingly sour for Alvarez in the Spanish capital.
He was left out of Atletico Madrid’s opening La Liga fixture, a 2-0 home win over Malaga. His absence did not go unnoticed. Hostile chants rang out from sections of the home support, a clear sign that patience is thinning as speculation grows.
Diego Simeone tried to cool the situation with a fitness-based explanation.
“We don't believe Julian Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow's game. Hopefully, over these next four days, he'll make further progress and we'll be closer to where we want him to be,” the Atletico coach said.
On paper, it is a straightforward comment about match readiness. In reality, the timing has poured fuel on the transfer fire, with many reading it as a hint that the club are bracing for life without him.
Decision time for player and club
The clock is now the most powerful force in this saga. The transfer window is closing in, and both Arsenal and Atletico are running out of room to manoeuvre.
Alvarez is expected to communicate his decision on his future today. If he gives the green light to Arsenal, the pressure immediately shifts to the two clubs to find common ground on the fee. If he opts to stay, the London side must pivot fast.
For Mikel Arteta and Arsenal’s hierarchy, the equation is brutal: either push their bid closer to Atletico’s demands or walk away and scramble for an alternative attacking target in the final days of the window.
One way or another, Alvarez’s call will shape the rest of Arsenal’s summer – and could redefine Atletico’s attack before the deadline slams shut.
