Arsenal Signs Ezri Konsa as First Defensive Signing of Summer
Arsenal have moved to reinforce the heart of their back line, sealing the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa on a long-term deal.
The 28-year-old becomes the club’s first defensive arrival of the window, joining after seven seasons at Villa Park, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable performers. Across all competitions, he passed the 200-appearance mark for Villa and grew into a cornerstone of their recent resurgence.
Konsa’s journey to north London has been steady, not spectacular – but always upward. He came through at Charlton Athletic, breaking into the first team in 2016 and quickly standing out as one of the club’s most promising young defenders. Two strong seasons there earned him a move to Brentford in 2018, where his form in the 2018–19 campaign pushed him firmly onto the top-flight radar.
Aston Villa made their move in 2019, and Konsa never really looked back. Consistency became his calling card. His blend of pace, strength and calm decision-making, coupled with the ability to slot in both at centre-back and right-back, turned him into one of the division’s most dependable defenders and a key figure in Villa’s back line.
That club form eventually translated into a full England breakthrough. Having represented his country at Under-20 and Under-21 level, Konsa made his senior debut in 2023 and has since become a regular in the Three Lions setup, featuring at Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.
Comments from Arsenal Sporting Director
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta underlined why the club pushed to get the deal done.
“We are delighted to complete the signing of Ezri Konsa. He is a defender of high quality, and his physical attributes, composure and tactical intelligence have made him one of the most consistent players at this level in the Premier League,” Berta said. “Thanks to his ability to play at centre-back and right-back, Ezri will give our team important flexibility, while maintaining the high defensive standards that are a key element in our pursuit of major honours.”
Berta stressed that Arsenal are not just buying a skill set, but a presence.
“We are welcoming a player with proven experience in the Premier League and at international level, along with strong leadership qualities, and he will be able to adapt smoothly to our style of play. Just as importantly, we are welcoming a player who possesses the character and mentality needed to make an immediate impact within our club.”
Konsa will wear the number 15 shirt and links up with his new team-mates in London immediately, stepping into a squad that expects to challenge for major trophies – and now has another seasoned international to lean on at the back.
