Jose Mourinho Warns Vinicius Junior Against Leaving Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho says he personally stepped in to warn Vinicius Junior he would regret walking away from Real Madrid for Arsenal this summer.
The Brazilian forward had been at the centre of intense speculation over a blockbuster move to the Premier League, with Arsenal ready to shatter both their transfer record and wage structure to land the 26-year-old. Reports in Spain and England suggested the North London club were prepared to put around €150 million on the table, a fee that would have set a new British record, with Vinicius then heading into the final year of his previous deal.
Instead, he has doubled down on Madrid. Vinicius signed a lucrative new contract that ties him to the Bernabeu until 2032, extending what will become at least an eight-season stay in white.
“Don't go. It's not worth it”
Speaking to El Chiringuito TV, the returning Real Madrid head coach revealed he picked up the phone to deliver a blunt message to his star winger.
“I called him, I told him Vini, where do you want to go? You only know Real Madrid,” Mourinho said.
“When you leave, then you'll know what Real Madrid is. Don't go. It's not worth it. I was sure [he would stay] because he is in love with Real Madrid!”
The warning was clear: from Mourinho’s perspective, there is no step up from Madrid. Any move, even one as seismic as a record-breaking transfer to Arsenal and the Premier League, would represent a step down.
Arsenal’s ambition was real, their offer enormous. But Mourinho’s words, and Vinicius’ own attachment to the club that made him a global star, kept one of world football’s most devastating forwards exactly where he is.
