Saudi Roshn League Calendar Shake-Up Ahead of Gulf 27

The Saudi Roshn League is bracing for a shake-up to its calendar, with the national team’s Arabian Gulf Cup campaign set to take priority over domestic action.

Saudi Arabia will host the 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, “Gulf 27”, in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October, and that tournament window is already reshaping the league schedule.

According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiah, the Roshn League association is preparing a package of fixture changes after a direct request from national team coach Georgios Donis. The Greek manager has asked for the national team’s training camp to be extended by an extra seven days in the build-up to the tournament, a move that leaves the league with little choice but to redraw part of its calendar.

Those changes are not minor. They are expected to affect more than one round of fixtures, with the eighth round under particular threat. That matchday is currently slated for 17 September, falling less than a week before “Gulf 27” kicks off in Jeddah.

The standout casualty would be a blockbuster clásico: Al-Hilal vs Al-Ittihad at Kingdom Arena. Officials now anticipate that entire round will be postponed to clear space for Donis’s extended preparations.

The national team coach is pushing hard for every available day. His target is clear: to return Saudi Arabia to the top of the Gulf podium for the first time since 2003, ending a 23-year wait for the title.

Donis took charge of the Saudi national team in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. That campaign ended in disappointment, with Saudi Arabia exiting at the group stage, bottom of Group H with just two points.

Now, with the Gulf crown back on home soil and the league calendar bending around his plans, Donis has his stage. The question is whether this disruption to the Roshn League will be remembered as a necessary sacrifice for a long-awaited regional triumph.
