Jofre Torrents Joins Ajax from Barcelona

Barcelona have agreed to sell young full-back Jofre Torrents to Ajax in a deal worth around €6 million, including fixed fees and variables, with the Catalan club retaining 50% of the player’s rights.

The agreement between the clubs was sealed on Thursday night, when the transfer documents were signed, closing the door on Torrents’ long spell at La Masia and opening another in Amsterdam.

From La Masia to Amsterdam

Torrents, 19, is expected to travel to the Dutch capital in the coming hours to undergo his medical and sign a four-year contract with Ajax. His departure ends a Barcelona journey that began in 2017, when he joined the academy as a ten-year-old, and culminated in four official first-team appearances last season.

He also featured in this summer’s pre-season friendlies against CE Europa and Birmingham City, hinting at a possible role under Hansi Flick that ultimately never materialised.

Right now, the defender is waiting on Barcelona’s final authorisation to fly. If the green light arrives quickly, he could complete his medical and sign immediately. If not, the plan shifts: he would travel on Sunday, watch his new teammates from the stands, and go through his medical on Monday.

Ajax host Heerenveen at 16:45 on Sunday in the second round of the Eredivisie. Torrents might not be on the pitch, but his new reality will be right in front of him.

First step abroad, fierce competition at Ajax

This move is Torrents’ first experience outside Spain, and it comes with real demands. Ajax, still a club that expects to dominate domestically and showcase young talent in Europe, will not offer him a gentle introduction.

He will have to fight for minutes against Caio Henrique, who arrived earlier this summer for €10 million and is expected to compete for the same position. For a 19-year-old leaving home for the first time, it is a bold choice — and a clear statement of ambition from both player and club.

Deco’s clear-out gathers pace

For Barcelona, the sale is part of a broader plan. Sporting director Deco is pushing to trim the squad before the transfer window closes, and Torrents’ departure is another piece moved off the board.

At least five more exits are being prepared. Marc Casado, Hector Fort, Tommy Marques, Guille Fernandez and Toni Fernandez have all been training away from the main group in recent days. The intention is obvious: protect them from injury and keep the path clear for potential transfers.

All five are available on the market. None of them figure in Hansi Flick’s plans.

Torrents, then, becomes the first of a likely wave of academy departures. The question now is not whether more will follow, but how many of La Masia’s next generation will be wearing different colours by the time this window slams shut.
