Getafe Pursues Stefan Bajcetic as Liverpool Faces Late-Window Decision

Getafe have opened talks with Liverpool over a deal for Stefan Bajcetic, with the Spanish club exploring a move in the final two weeks of the summer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 21-year-old midfielder, once one of the brightest sparks of Liverpool’s post-World Cup reboot, now stands at a crossroads.

From derby star to stalled prospect

Bajcetic’s rise felt rapid and inevitable. In the months after the 2022 World Cup, he broke into Liverpool’s first team as an 18-year-old and immediately looked at ease. He brought bite, calmness on the ball and a maturity that belied his age.

One performance in particular stood out: a standout display in a derby win in early 2023, when he looked like he belonged at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield for years to come.

Then the momentum vanished.

Persistent injuries have ravaged his progress. He hasn’t played a competitive minute since the closing stages of the 2024/25 season, a brutal gap in development at such a crucial age.

Getafe make their move

Romano reported on Monday that Getafe have “opened talks to sign” Bajcetic, with discussions ongoing over the “formula” of the deal. The structure is still unclear: Liverpool have not yet indicated whether any agreement would be a loan or a permanent transfer.

What is clear is that the interest is concrete, and it would represent a return home for the Spaniard if a deal is struck with the LaLiga side.

Bajcetic has only just returned to full training, rejoining the Liverpool group and travelling with Andoni Iraola’s squad for their pre-season tour of the United States. He trained, he integrated, he waited.

He did not play.

Despite being with the group, he failed to feature in any of Liverpool’s pre-season matches, losing a valuable chance to showcase himself to Iraola after so long out.

Lost ground in Liverpool’s midfield battle

That absence has consequences. While Bajcetic fought his way back to fitness, others surged ahead.

Trey Nyoni’s outstanding form has pushed the youngster further down the pecking order, and even the possibility of Curtis Jones leaving for Inter Milan has not obviously opened a path back into Iraola’s immediate plans for the 21-year-old.

For Liverpool, the calculation is delicate. Without clarity on Getafe’s proposal — whether it is a straight loan, an option or obligation to buy, or a permanent sale and at what price — it is hard to judge how wise it would be to let him go now.

For Bajcetic, the picture is more straightforward.

A decision that could define his next step

After months of “injury hell”, simply training again with his teammates will have felt like a small victory. But training sessions are not minutes, and he knows it.

At Anfield, his route to regular football looks increasingly crowded. At Getafe, the promise is obvious: a familiar league, a clear role, and the chance to rebuild a career that once looked like it was accelerating out of sight.

If the Spanish club can put game time at the centre of their pitch, the temptation for Bajcetic to go home and restart his story may be hard to resist.

Liverpool now have a fortnight to decide whether that restart happens in red or in blue.
