Erling Haaland is still the Fantasy Premier League captaincy default. But Gameweek 2 hands Bruno Fernandes a platform that’s simply too big to ignore.

Manchester United’s playmaker, priced at £12.0m, welcomes promoted Ipswich Town to Old Trafford on Sunday. He was the top-scoring player in home matches last season. That record alone shoves him straight into the conversation as the standout alternative to Haaland (£15.5m).

Haaland, meanwhile, opens the Gameweek away to Crystal Palace on Friday night. He dominated away scoring in 2025/26, but the numbers behind Fernandes’ home form tilt the scales more than many managers might expect.

Ownership, Expectations… and Blanks

Gameweek 1 was a reminder of the risk baked into mass captaincy.

Haaland was handed the armband by 4.38 million managers. Fernandes by 1.48 million. Their ownership figures – 67.9 per cent for Haaland, 48.5 per cent for Fernandes – underlined just how heavily backed both premiums were.

That disappointment sets up a fascinating Gameweek 2 dilemma. Stick with the crowd and trust Haaland’s away pedigree? Or lean into Fernandes’ Old Trafford dominance?

Odegaard, operating in the most advanced central role behind Kai Havertz, scored and collected 11 points against Coventry City. Arsenal now head to Aston Villa, a side just beaten 4-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion. That bruising defeat raises serious questions about Villa’s defensive resilience heading into this one.

Palmer and Joao Pedro carried Chelsea’s threat in their 2026/27 opener, each producing a goal and an assist away to Fulham. Now they return to Stamford Bridge to face Brighton, and, like Fernandes, they have home advantage on their side in Gameweek 2.

If managers are hunting for a captaincy differential outside the Haaland–Fernandes axis, these three are the obvious names. Odegaard brings the central talisman role and a strong fixture. Palmer and Joao Pedro offer form, penalties, and a home tie in a Chelsea attack that already looks sharp.

So Who Gets the Armband?

Strip away sentiment and habit, and the numbers point in one direction.

Fernandes’ Old Trafford record is too strong to dismiss, especially with Ipswich the visitors. His consistency at home, combined with his ceiling for double-digit hauls, makes him the standout pick to outscore Haaland in Gameweek 2.

Haaland will still command the majority of armbands. He almost always does. But for managers ready to challenge that template, Fernandes is the clear first choice, with Odegaard and Palmer the leading contenders just behind him.
