Falkirk Signs Finley Barbrook as 13th Addition

Falkirk’s summer churn shows no sign of slowing. On Friday, John McGlynn landed his 13th new face, securing Ipswich Town midfielder Finley Barbrook on a season-long loan – and the manager made it clear he still wants up to three more additions before he’s satisfied.

Barbrook, 21, comes north from a club riding the high of promotion to the English Premier League, and he arrives with the kind of profile McGlynn has been hunting for all window. At 6ft 2in and naturally defensive-minded, he spent last season in English League Two with Colchester United, making 16 league appearances and scoring once.

This isn’t a punt. McGlynn revealed Falkirk have tracked the youngster for a while and were prepared to wait.

“Finley's someone we've had on the radar for some time,” he said, admitting he would have preferred to get the deal done earlier. “Obviously I would have liked to have got him in a bit quicker but we're delighted to have him.”

The attraction is clear. Barbrook has already sampled senior football on loan, and McGlynn believes that grounding matters when dropping a player straight into a squad with expectations.

“He's had loans at other clubs which is a big plus when you're bringing players in,” the Falkirk boss said. “He's quite an all-rounder in that he can take the ball deep, he can make passes, he's athletic, he gets about the pitch.”

The physical profile has been a key part of Falkirk’s recruitment drive. McGlynn has chased size without sacrificing composure on the ball, a balance he admits is hard to strike.

“The size of him, that physicality is something that we've been trying to find without losing the quality,” he explained. “Sometimes when you go bigger, big guys can't do some of the things that the tiny wee guys can do, and likewise, but he's a well-balanced boy. We've been needing someone exactly like that.

“We've been patient waiting on him because he was the one that we wanted.”

Barbrook joins a Falkirk squad gearing up for Sunday’s trip to Motherwell, and his arrival adds another option in the engine room as the Bairns look to carry momentum into the campaign. Yet McGlynn’s comments underline that this is still very much a work in progress.

Asked if he planned to keep adding to his squad, he didn’t shy away.

“It could be as many as three, maybe three more if everything goes to plan and if we're lucky enough to get it done,” he said. “It isn't easy, but we have the scope to do it and we're trying to do it.”

Thirteen signings in, with more to come, Falkirk’s rebuild is bold. The question now is whether this reshaped group, with Barbrook anchoring the midfield, can turn an aggressive summer into a season that finally matches the club’s ambitions.
