England Faces Livramento Injury Setback Before World Cup Opener
England’s World Cup preparations have been jolted on the eve of their tournament opener, with Tino Livramento set to fly home after suffering a calf injury.
Thomas Tuchel’s squad are heading to Texas following a final training session at their Kansas City base, where the mood had been calm and businesslike ahead of Wednesday’s Group L clash with Croatia. Until now, England had trained in front of the media with a full deck, every player present and involved since landing in Missouri.
That picture has changed abruptly.
Livramento, the Newcastle full-back whose energy and versatility had given England another dynamic option down the flanks, withdrew from scheduled media duties on Sunday. Reports since have indicated the 21-year-old has picked up a calf problem serious enough to end his World Cup before it has even begun.
The timing is brutal. One more session, one more flight, and then the opener. Instead, England’s medical staff are facing a race against the clock and the administrators are preparing paperwork.
Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah is understood to be under consideration as Livramento’s replacement. It would be a like-for-like swap only in terms of squad numbers, not profile: Chalobah offers cover across the back line but lacks Livramento’s attacking thrust from full-back. Tuchel, who knows Chalobah well from their time together at Chelsea, may yet lean on that familiarity as he reshapes his defensive options.
Tournament regulations give England a narrow window. They can replace an injured player up to 24 hours before their first match, which means they have until 3pm local time in Texas (9pm Irish time) to complete and submit the necessary documents to FIFA.
What had been a smooth build-up now carries an early test of England’s adaptability. On the eve of a World Cup, the margins are thin, and one enforced change at the back could echo far beyond the opening night in Texas.
