Edmond Tapsoba: Premier League Transfer Battle Heats Up

Edmond Tapsoba has moved to the top of Premier League shopping lists this summer, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Newcastle all circling around the Bayer Leverkusen centre-back.

The 27-year-old Burkina Faso international has become one of the most closely watched defenders in Europe in recent weeks, and the interest from England is no longer tentative.

United make the first move

Manchester United have already stepped forward. Club representatives have held talks with Tapsoba’s camp over a possible deal, sounding out both the financial demands and the player’s openness to a move.

Tottenham and Newcastle are not standing back, though. Both clubs are keeping regular contact as they weigh up how aggressively to move for a defender they see as a potential cornerstone of their back lines.

Leverkusen, fresh from establishing themselves among the Bundesliga elite, are not in the mood to sell cheaply. The German champions have set a clear valuation at around €50million (£42.8m / £58.4m) for their key centre-back, and they know they hold strong cards.

Tapsoba signed a contract extension earlier this year that runs all the way to 2031. On paper, that gives Leverkusen enormous leverage. They would rather keep him. But they have not completely closed the door. A bid that hits their price could change the conversation quickly.

A defender built for England

Inside Germany, Tapsoba is widely viewed as one of the most complete centre-backs in the league. He marries physical power with calm, progressive passing from the back and the mobility to defend big spaces – exactly the profile Premier League clubs crave.

Since arriving from Vitoria Guimaraes in 2020, he has grown into a pillar of Leverkusen’s defence. Across all competitions, he has racked up 270 appearances and even chipped in with 13 goals, underlining his threat at set pieces and comfort in the opposition box.

That blend of attributes has convinced scouts that his game translates perfectly to the pace and intensity of English football. It explains why three ambitious Premier League projects are converging on the same name.

A three-way battle taking shape

With the transfer window still open, the story has room to run. United are currently viewed as the most advanced in their talks, but the presence of Tottenham and Newcastle ensures this will not be a simple pursuit.

Leverkusen’s firm asking price and Tapsoba’s long contract place the Bundesliga side in a commanding negotiating position. Any club wanting to prise him away will have to pay at the top end of the market for a defender.

What happens next will hinge on who blinks first: the clubs chasing a top-class centre-back, or Leverkusen, who know they possess one of the most sought-after defensive options available this summer.
