Manchester United Explore Alejandro Balde Transfer Options

Manchester United have picked up the phone. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League club have contacted super-agent Jorge Mendes to sound out the situation of FC Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, as their search for a new option on the flank gathers pace.

United have been scouring the market for a left-back and had Lewis Hall of Newcastle United among their preferred targets. That path has closed. Newcastle have effectively shut the door on any deal for the English defender, forcing United to look elsewhere.

The next name on the agenda: Alejandro Balde.

United call Mendes over Balde

With Hall off the table, United moved quickly. Mendes, who represents a number of high-profile players and holds strong ties across Europe, received the call as the club sought clarity on Balde’s status and the conditions required for any potential move.

The timing is no coincidence. Mendes is in Barcelona, holding talks on several dossiers, including the future of Marc Casado, who is expected to leave the Spotify Camp Nou. United’s enquiry drops straight into the middle of those discussions.

Given that context, Balde’s name is expected to come up when Mendes sits down with Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco. United want to know if there is even a crack in the door.

So far, there isn’t.

Balde’s message: he’s not leaving

Romano’s line is clear: Balde has no intention of leaving Barcelona this summer.

The La Masia product is settled at his boyhood club and prepared to fight for his place, even with increased competition at left-back. Joao Cancelo’s permanent arrival adds another heavyweight to the battle for minutes, but Balde is not backing away.

At 22, he sees his future in Blaugrana colours. The only scenario in which he would reconsider, according to the report, is if Barcelona themselves told him they wanted him to go. That has not happened.

For now, United’s interest remains just that – interest. The clock is ticking with less than two weeks left in the transfer window, and the situation sits in that uneasy space between an exploratory call and a real negotiation.

From back trouble to starting role

Balde’s summer has not been smooth. A back problem disrupted the early part of his pre-season and kept him out of action when others were building rhythm and fitness.

Once recovered, he began to claw back those lost minutes. He started in the friendly against FC Basel and again in the Joan Gamper Trophy clash with Al-Ahly, important steps as he sharpened up ahead of the new campaign.

He is tied to Barcelona until 2028, a long contract that gives the Catalan club control and leverage. With Cancelo only just arriving this week, Balde is expected to start against Elche this weekend, another chance to underline why United – and others – are watching.

For now, though, the message from the player’s side is simple: Manchester United can ask the question, but Barcelona still hold the answer.
