Christophe Dugarry Criticizes Kylian Mbappe’s Ballon d’Or Ambitions as Selfish

Christophe Dugarry Targets Kylian Mbappe Over Ballon d’Or Focus

Former France international Christophe Dugarry has openly criticized Kylian Mbappe for his public pursuit of the Ballon d’Or. The ex-striker, a 1998 World Cup winner, views Mbappe's focus on individual awards as damaging to his role as a leader at both club and country level.

Dugarry’s Sharp Words

The tension between past French football stars and current players is nothing new, but Dugarry’s remarks cut deeper than usual. After Mbappe expressed his ambition to claim his first Ballon d’Or, Dugarry condemned the forward’s public declarations as lacking humility and prioritizing personal success over team achievements.

Known for his frank opinions, Dugarry argued that campaigning openly for such an individual prize diminishes a player of Mbappe’s standing.

"Childish and Pathetic" Comments

Dugarry stated: “To publicly ask for an individual award like that, I find it CHILDISH and PATHETIC. There’s nothing great about asking for it, especially as captain of your national team.”

The criticism particularly highlights Mbappe’s position as captain of Les Bleus, suggesting he should focus on collective responsibility rather than personal accolades.

Mbappe’s Confidence in His Chances

Mbappe recently admitted he feels well placed to win the Ballon d’Or, citing his move to Real Madrid as a factor increasing his visibility for such honors.

“I think when you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” Mbappe said. “Maybe it’s a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think.”

Achievements and Criticism

Despite not winning major trophies in his last season with Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe remains one of the top scorers globally, with 42 goals in 44 games for Real Madrid last season. Still, some critics highlight his lack of a Champions League title during his time in Paris as a blemish on his record.

Dugarry sees this emphasis on individual stats over team success as reflective of a broader issue in modern football, where star players often overshadow the collective system.

“Football is becoming more and more individualistic, and far too often it makes me sick. Instead of talking about yourself and individual awards, you should be talking about the team, about sharing success and about the trophies you didn’t win but wanted to win together,” Dugarry added.
