Djed Spence has made his move. At least in his mind.

The England international is understood to be keen on a switch to Liverpool, with Tottenham Hotspur setting a firm price for any club looking to test their resolve before the window shuts.

Liverpool’s defensive puzzle

Liverpool’s summer has been relatively restrained. Two signings so far – Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet – hint at a rebuild in stages rather than a frantic overhaul. Targets remain on the wings, with PSG duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye on the radar, but Andoni Iraola’s problems run deeper than the forward line.

The back line is stretched. Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez are all currently unavailable for various reasons, leaving Liverpool light both in the middle and out wide. Full-back, once a position of abundance at Anfield, now looks like a fault line. Centre-back is not far behind.

That combination has pushed a new defender high up the list. A full-back who can defend one-on-one, carry the ball, and live with the physical demands of Iraola’s system. Spence fits that profile, and his name is firmly in the conversation.

Spence’s stock on the rise

Spence arrives at this moment from a position of strength. His performances for England at the World Cup have sharpened interest, and he was among Tottenham’s more reliable performers last season in a side that often veered between promising and chaotic.

Even so, his path at Spurs is far from clear. With Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson expected to be the preferred full-backs next season, Tottenham are prepared to listen under the right conditions. Spence is too valuable to be a permanent understudy, and he knows it.

According to Anfield Sector, the defender is “extremely receptive” to the idea of joining Liverpool this summer. The report underlines that Liverpool’s interest is real, even if the club are also weighing up other options at right-back as Iraola wrestles with what are described as “defensive concerns” in that area.

The message is simple: Spence would come if Liverpool call. The question is whether they do.

The price of potential

Interest is one thing. Meeting Tottenham’s valuation is another.

Spurs reporter @szyexcl has indicated that the north London club want at least £35m for Spence in this window, with the player “very open” to Liverpool if an offer lands on the table. That figure already places him in the bracket of a serious investment rather than a depth signing.

Not everyone thinks £35m is enough. Former Premier League scout Bryan King argued last month that Tottenham should not even consider a fee below £50m.

“I think he’s done well every time he’s played for England. They’d be foolish to let him go for £25m, that is for sure,” King said. “You wouldn’t let him go for £25m. You wouldn’t even start thinking about letting him go for under £50m.

“We’re talking about a young, current England international. It’s a situation where Tottenham would be stupid to let him go.”

That stance, whether shared inside the club or not, underlines how highly some in the game rate Spence’s ceiling. Young. International. Proven in spells at the highest level. Those are the ingredients that inflate a modern defender’s price.

A test of Liverpool’s intent

For Liverpool, the equation is blunt. They need a full-back. They need another centre-back. They have a manager whose style demands aggressive, athletic defenders who can survive repeated high-intensity transitions. And they are shopping in a market where English internationals, especially in their early twenties, rarely come cheap.

Spence is open to the move. Tottenham have named their price. Other names remain in play at Anfield.
