De Zerbi's First Look: Tottenham's Pre-Season Friendly vs MK Dons
Tottenham’s £200m rebuild steps out of the shadows tonight, not in front of a packed South Stand, but on a training pitch at Hotspur Way with only staff, scouts and the odd bird overhead for company.
Behind closed doors, the Roberto De Zerbi era starts to take shape.
De Zerbi’s first look under match lights
Two weeks of drills, double sessions and tactical lectures now get their first test as Spurs host MK Dons in their opening pre-season friendly, a 5pm kick-off that will matter far more to the head coach than the scoreboard ever will.
This is De Zerbi’s first chance to see his ideas under match conditions. Who has picked up the patterns. Who can play at his tempo. Who can’t.
Tottenham have thrown more than £200million at reshaping the squad this summer, six signings already through the door, and tonight should offer a first glimpse of how some of those pieces might fit.
Tonali and Fernandes on debut watch
All eyes, internally at least, will fall on Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Both are in line to feature against MK Dons, the pair expected to anchor or at least energise a new-look midfield.
Tonali’s involvement may be rationed. Work permit issues delayed his start to pre-season, costing him valuable sessions while team-mates were already absorbing De Zerbi’s demands. Spurs will not risk overloading him in a low-key July run-out.
Fernandes, by contrast, has been embedded from the outset and should get a decent stretch of minutes as staff gauge his rhythm and range in English conditions.
New goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has also trained with the group and will be pushing for time between the posts, even if the afternoon is likely to be carved up to share the load.
World Cup contingent still on ice
The squad remains incomplete. Those who went deep at this summer’s World Cup are still on their mandated breaks and will not feature.
Pedro Porro, a starter for Spain in Sunday’s 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina in the final, is on holiday rather than haring up the right flank. Cristian Romero and Marcos Senesi, who were also involved in the showpiece, are in the same boat and will report back later.
Djed Spence, fresh from an impressive tournament as England finished third, is also missing. His stock rose with his performances; tonight, he can only watch from afar.
One high-profile arrival did clock in this week. Scotland captain Andy Robertson reported for his first day as a Spurs player on Tuesday, walking into Hotspur Way as a free transfer from Liverpool. The left-back will not be rushed into action, but his presence underlines the scale of the summer overhaul.
Injury rehab and long roads back
Not everyone at the training ground is ready for match minutes.
Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert, both recovering from serious anterior cruciate ligament injuries, have been seen around the complex but remain some way off a return. Their work is still confined to tailored rehab rather than full-contact football.
Mohammed Kudus is on a similar track. The attacking midfielder continues his recovery from a significant quad injury on a separate programme, still building the base fitness required before he can be thrown back into the mix.
The same goes for Dejan Kulusevski. The winger did not play a single minute last season because of a persistent knee problem and Spurs will tread carefully. A behind-closed-doors friendly in July is no place to gamble with a long-term asset.
Academy auditions: Moore and Donley in the spotlight
If the senior absentees open gaps, the academy hopefuls are ready to sprint into them.
Mikey Moore has trained with the first team and is expected to get minutes against MK Dons. Fresh from an eye-catching loan spell at Rangers, the forward has suitors across Europe but now faces the most important audience of all: De Zerbi himself.
The Italian has not yet decided whether Moore should be part of his Premier League squad or sent out again to develop. Tonight’s performance, in a low-key setting but under a very sharp gaze, will feed directly into that call.
Jamie Donley is another youngster making noise. The academy forward has been involved with the seniors in recent weeks and is understood to have impressed De Zerbi with his attitude and touch. A strong showing here could accelerate his path towards meaningful minutes when the real stuff begins.
Heavy rotation, first clues
Pre-season openers are rarely about cohesion, and this one will be no different. De Zerbi is expected to rotate heavily, using the 90 minutes to spread game time across his squad and check fitness levels rather than chase fluency.
That will not stop the guessing games. A likely starting XI, as projected, could see Kinsky in goal behind a back line of Takai, Phillips, Ben Davies and Destiny Udogie. Fernandes and Tonali may pair up in midfield, with Yang and Donley operating behind a front line of Mathys Tel and Dominic Solanke.
It is only a prediction, and De Zerbi will not show his full hand in a match played away from the cameras. Still, shapes and partnerships will be noted. So will body language.
The venue is modest, the opposition from League One, the stands empty. Yet for Spurs’ new manager, for the £200m worth of fresh faces, and for the academy prospects chasing a seat on the plane when the Premier League season kicks off, this quiet evening at Hotspur Way could say plenty about who really belongs in his plans.
