Crystal Palace Investigated by WSL for Substitution Rule Violation, Facing Possible Points Loss

Crystal Palace Under WSL Scrutiny After Breaching Substitution Rules

Crystal Palace FC Women find themselves embroiled in a disciplinary issue following their recent Women’s Super League (WSL) match against Everton Women. Although they secured a 1-0 win on the field, an investigation has been launched over a breach of substitution rules that could cost them points or even lead to a replay of the fixture.

Victory Marred by Substitution Controversy

The Eagles’ debut season in the WSL took a complicated turn after their opening game on Sunday. They managed to claim victory thanks to a first-half goal from Lexi Lloyd-Smith, but the celebrations have been dampened by regulatory concerns.

The issue arose because Crystal Palace used four separate substitution windows during the match, which goes against current league regulations. While teams can make up to five substitutions, these must be made within a maximum of three separate stoppages during play, excluding half-time.

WSL Confirms Formal Investigation

The league released a statement confirming the breach and outlining the details: "We can confirm there was a breach of competition rules in the Crystal Palace versus Everton match. Crystal Palace used a fourth substitution opportunity during a fourth stoppage in play, when the rules permit a maximum of three substitution opportunities per match. We will now conduct an investigation alongside both clubs and Pro Ref and update in due course."

This fourth substitution happened during the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time. Manager Jo Potter brought on Kirsty Howat to replace Shannon O’Brien, following earlier substitutions for Abbie Larkin, Ashleigh Weerden, and Allyson Swaby, each made at different stoppages.

Possible Outcomes and Tribunal Process

The WSL does not prescribe a set penalty for this violation. Instead, the case may be sent to an independent tribunal empowered to enforce various sanctions to protect the competition’s integrity.

Potential penalties range from warnings and fines to deductions of points or other sporting punishments. One of the harshest consequences could involve ordering the match to be replayed, which would erase Crystal Palace’s initial win and require both teams to face off again.

Officials Suspended Following Oversight

The repercussions extend beyond Crystal Palace. The officiating team, led by Megan Wilson, failed to catch the rule breach during the match. Due to this oversight, the entire refereeing group has been suspended from upcoming WSL fixtures as a direct result of the incident.

After earning promotion last season as runners-up in the second tier, Crystal Palace now face a challenging visit to Arsenal Women this Sunday.
