Cristian Chivu on John Stones: A Benchmark for Inter's Ambitions
Cristian Chivu did not bother to hide his satisfaction. On the eve of a glamour test against Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City, the Inter coach made it clear that landing John Stones is more than a simple market coup. For him, it is a statement.
The England defender, long admired for his blend of technique and authority, arrives as a cornerstone, not a luxury. Chivu sees him as a player who can instantly reshape the back line and, with it, the team’s ambitions.
“I’m happy with his arrival; he is important to us for many reasons – for his quality, his personality, and his charisma. He raises the level of our defence,” Chivu said in his pre-match press conference, framing Stones as a leader as much as a defender.
Stones as a benchmark, not a finishing touch
Inter’s coach stressed that the squad already has a strong base, even as several players remain on post-World Cup breaks. The group, as he sees it, is competitive. But the club’s targets demand more than mere competitiveness.
“Right now, we’re enjoying who we have here, waiting for those returning from post-World Cup holidays, and then we still have a month left in the transfer window. The squad is competitive, but you always need key players who can make you take that quality leap and allow you to stay aligned with this club’s ambitions.”
That “quality leap” has become a recurring theme of Chivu’s tenure. Stones, in his mind, embodies it. His arrival is not the end of the rebuild but a benchmark for what must follow.
The coach made no attempt to dress it up: the market remains open, and Inter intend to stay active.
City test comes early – and at less than full throttle
The timing of this marquee friendly against Maresca’s City side offers an early, stern examination. Inter are not yet at full physical capacity, and Chivu acknowledged it bluntly, without searching for excuses.
“It’s special to face a great team like City. Obviously, we’re not at 100% physically, but we’ll do our best. The squad is competitive, but there’s always a need for important players. Stones raises the bar. We are keeping an eye out for opportunities.”
That phrase – “raises the bar” – surfaced again. It is not accidental. Chivu wants that standard to echo through the dressing room and the boardroom alike.
Right wing next on the agenda
Stones’ signing will not close Inter’s summer business. Far from it. The club are actively scouring the market to strengthen the right flank, an area identified as a priority if Inter are to match the level set by their new defensive lynchpin.
Chivu, though, urged calm. He knows how quickly transfer fever can grip a fanbase, and he prefers a measured build to a frantic spree.
“Patience is needed, the market is still long. We are all good at understanding what’s missing right now, especially regarding squad depth,” he noted, underlining that the issue is not just about a starting XI, but about sustaining a season on multiple fronts.
Raising the bar, piece by piece
If there is a single thread running through Chivu’s words, it is his insistence on standards. He does not simply want new faces; he wants players who embrace the demands of a club that expects to compete at the highest level.
“I have always asked to raise the bar and bring in important players who want to be part of this wonderful group. We are paying attention to opportunities to raise the level that these lads have maintained for many years.”
The message is clear. Stones is the latest to step into a dressing room that has carried Inter for years, but not the last. The defence has its new reference point. The right wing is next in line.
The window is still open. So, clearly, is Inter’s ambition.
