Como Support Roberta Picchi with Long-Term Contract After Cancer Diagnosis

Como have responded to Roberta Picchi’s breast cancer diagnosis with a powerful gesture of faith, handing the forward a new contract running until the end of the 2027-28 season.

The decision comes just weeks before the club make their women’s Serie A debut, a landmark moment in Como’s history now intertwined with a deeply personal battle for one of their leaders.

The 34-year-old Italian is preparing to begin cancer treatment. Como’s medical staff will work alongside the specialists in charge of her care, with the club stressing that their “continued commitment” to Picchi goes far beyond the pitch.

In a statement, Como 1907 underlined that the entire organisation stands behind her and her family, pledging all the support they will need in the coming months. The club also called for Picchi’s privacy to be respected as she focuses on treatment and recovery.

Picchi played a central role last season as Como stormed to the Serie B title, finishing 11 points clear of Lumezzane to secure a historic first promotion to the top flight of Italian women’s football. She now faces a very different kind of challenge.

“Nothing should ever be taken for granted, and I feel fortunate,” she wrote on social media, before adding a line that felt like a rallying cry: “It’s time to play my match, but I’ll be back even more determined.”

Como, coached by Selena Mazzantini, open their first Serie A campaign against AC Milan on 26 September. When they walk out that day, they will do so with one eye on the future and one of their key players fighting her biggest contest away from the stadium lights.
