City Maintains Perfect Start with Haaland's Winning Goal

City’s perfect league start stayed intact with that narrow 1-0 win over Coventry, Erling Haaland doing what Erling Haaland does to settle it. Now the domestic grind gives way to European lights, and Enzo Maresca is ready to shake the team up.

He has little choice.

Injuries and a reshuffle

Coventry brought three points, but also a headache or two. Nico O’Reilly was set to start before a lower back problem in the warm-up ruled him out, forcing Enzo Fernandez into the XI at short notice. Then Deadline Day arrival Iliman Ndiaye limped off with a knock, heading straight onto a treatment list that already included Jeremy Doku.

Maresca had already flagged that changes were coming for the trip to the Estadio Do Dragao. After beating Coventry, he laid out his plan clearly: Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ryan McAidoo and Ndiaye all need Champions League minutes, and he intends to give them exactly that.

The only question is whether Ndiaye is ready.

Ndiaye decision shapes the attack

The forward has been back in training, a positive sign that points towards involvement in Porto. If he is passed fit, Ndiaye is expected to start off the left, with Antoine Semenyo dropping out and McAidoo coming in on the right. Fernandez would then operate as the No 10, pulling the strings behind Haaland.

Bouaddi is set to anchor the midfield alongside Elliot Anderson, a youthful pairing charged with protecting what should remain an unchanged back four: Josko Gvardiol, Marc Guehi, Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov. Matheus Nunes has travelled and is in contention for minutes, adding another option if the tempo needs lifting or legs begin to tire.

Haaland to start despite rotation warning

Maresca has already warned that Haaland cannot play every minute as City chase trophies on four fronts. The rotation will come. It has to.

But not yet.

In Portugal, with the European campaign just kicking into gear, the prolific Norwegian is still expected to lead the line.
