Goretzka Sidelined as Villa's Nightmare Start Deepens

Leon Goretzka has barely unpacked his bags at Aston Villa and already he has been forced to step away.

On Monday, the 31-year-old midfielder announced on Instagram that he must take a break from action, ruling him out until after the international fixtures at the end of September and start of October.

“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after the time without matches,” Goretzka wrote. “It is frustrating, but I need this short break now so I can come back at full strength.”

No drama, just blunt reality. A key summer signing, out at the very moment Villa are crying out for stability.

Goretzka used the same post to thank the Europa League winners’ fans for the reception he has received since arriving. He said he feels in the right place, comfortable in his new surroundings, and wants to use the coming weeks to recover fully.

The timing could hardly be worse for Unai Emery. Goretzka will miss at least four more matches, including Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Bruges, where Villa are still hunting their first points of the campaign. Between now and the international break, they also face two Premier League fixtures and a League Cup tie without one of the players signed to anchor their midfield.

The Birmingham club then return to action on 10 October against Brentford FC, a date that now looms as a potential reset point — for both player and team.

From Bayern royalty to Villa’s early-season struggle

Goretzka arrived on a free transfer after eight years at Bayern Munich, bringing with him 73 caps for Germany and the kind of pedigree Villa hoped would drive them forward. Instead, the club have stumbled badly out of the blocks.

Three league matches, no wins, no goals. A disastrous start by any measure.

After back-to-back defeats to open the season, Villa finally scraped their first point at the weekend against Nottingham Forest. It stopped the bleeding, but it did not change the mood.

The summer had already stripped Emery of four pillars from Villa’s recent success: Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins all departed in the transfer window. The spine that helped carry the club to Europe has gone. Now, one of the headline arrivals is temporarily out of the picture as well.

For Goretzka, the mission is simple: heal, reset, return with the physical edge that defined his best years in Munich. For Villa, the question is harsher.
