Chelsea’s clear-out under Xabi Alonso is starting to bite, and some big defensive pieces are already halfway out of the door.

The new head coach has put eleven players up for sale as he trims a bloated squad that has lurched from one rebuild to the next. Behind the scenes, that policy is now hardening into concrete exits.

Chelsea have attacked this summer’s window with familiar ferocity. Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck have all arrived, and another signing has been agreed this week. The churn continues.

Sales have helped keep the books in check. The club have already banked over £100m from the departures of Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George, yet the squad still feels swollen. More players have to go if Alonso is to build something coherent.

No one is pretending there are many untouchables. Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto have all been linked with moves away, with Neto now on Manchester City’s radar. According to The Athletic, none of that trio sits in the “not for sale” bracket.

The same report lists Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Emmanuel Emegha among those available. At centre-back, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah are all expected to move on.

The clear-out is no longer theoretical. It is happening.

Chalobah to lead defensive exodus

Chalobah looks set to be the first of the senior defenders to go. A deal has been agreed with Serie A side Como, ending a long-running saga over his future and giving him a fresh start away from Stamford Bridge.

Once he steps through the exit, the door may not have time to swing shut.

Journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Badiashile is closing in on a switch to Napoli. He claims there is an agreement in principle between the defender and the Italian club on a contract running until 2031, structured as a season-long loan plus four additional years, worth around €2.8m per season. Talks between Napoli and Chelsea are said to be progressing over a loan with an option to buy.

It would be a swift change of scenery for a player once billed as a long-term pillar of the back line.

Disasi, meanwhile, is edging towards a return to the Premier League stage with Crystal Palace after his loan spell at West Ham. Schira reports that Palace are set to win the race for the centre-back on a loan deal that includes an option to buy, which could turn into an obligation if certain conditions are met.

Three defenders, three different routes out, one clear message: Alonso wants a new defensive core.

Mudryk’s return adds a different kind of decision

Not every big call this summer is about who leaves permanently. Mykhaylo Mudryk has re-entered the picture after serving a doping ban, adding a more delicate question to Alonso’s in-tray.

The winger made his comeback in Chelsea’s defeat to Juventus this week, a brief but symbolic appearance after a long, enforced absence. Speaking afterwards, Alonso did not hide what it meant to the dressing room.

“Yes, for sure, I’m really pleased for him. It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back, especially when I told him that before the game that was my idea, that he could play 10-15 minutes.

“He was thrilled, for sure. It was, after such a long period, to be back on the pitch, it was a great feeling for him and a great feeling for everyone as well.”

The human side of the story is obvious. The sporting question is sharper: where, and how quickly, does Mudryk fit into a squad that is being stripped back and rebuilt on the fly?

As Chelsea push through a triple defensive exit and weigh up offers for other big names, Alonso’s first season is already being shaped by ruthless calls. The only unknown now is how far this reset will go before the window finally slams shut.
