Chelsea Sign Italy International Marco Palestra

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Italy international Marco Palestra after the defender arrived in London for his medical, with Atalanta set for a major payday that underlines how highly rated the right-back has become.

The 26-year-old flew to the English capital on Thursday, and his camp spent the evening ironing out the final details of a long-term deal. Barring late drama, Palestra will put pen to paper on a contract at Stamford Bridge running for six years, with an option for a seventh.

Chelsea have not just beaten the competition. They have blown it away. Inter were in the race and on the table with a proposal worth around €2.5m per season. Chelsea simply doubled it. Palestra is expected to earn €5m net per year in West London, a salary that places him firmly among the most significant defensive investments of the Premier League summer.

The numbers on the transfer fee tell their own story. Reports in Italy suggest Atalanta will receive €57m up front, with a further €3m tied to achievable add-ons. Other voices around the deal, including British transfer specialist Ben Jacobs, frame it only as “in excess of €50m,” but the Italian figures point to a package nudging the €60m mark.

Atalanta have negotiated more than just a headline fee. The Bergamo club will retain a 10 per cent cut of any future sale, a clause that hints at their belief that Palestra’s value could climb again if he adapts quickly to the pace and physicality of English football.

For Chelsea, this is another bold move in a market they continue to attack aggressively, this time for a full-back whose rise from Serie A to the Premier League has been tracked by Europe’s elite. For Atalanta, it is a statement sale, carefully structured and potentially lucrative all over again when Palestra’s next big decision comes around.
