Chelsea's Midfield Woes Highlighted Despite £349m Summer Spending in Arsenal Defeat
Chelsea Struggle with Midfield Depth in 2-1 Loss to Arsenal
Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of champions Arsenal, ending the match with two players originally known as right-backs deployed in midfield. This lineup raised questions considering Chelsea's hefty £349 million investment in the summer transfer window.
The crucial moment came when Reece James, a former right-back, missed his mark on captain Martin Odegaard, who scored the winning goal at Emirates Stadium. Despite James performing well in general and having spent nearly half of last season in midfield, doubts remain about Chelsea's midfield options after Malo Gusto replaced Romeo Lavia midway through the second half.
Criticism arose over Chelsea’s lack of creativity off the bench and poor marking, which ultimately gave Arsenal the edge. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s substitutions played a significant role in securing victory for the hosts.
Ashley Young told BBC Sport, "Chelsea don’t have European football this season so they’re playing fewer games and can focus on the Premier League. But it’s concerning that by the end of a game against the champions, there are two right-backs in midfield."
Young added, "You look at Lavia, who missed a lot last season due to injury. The forwards will strike fear in teams, but behind them, the midfield is patchy with right-backs filling in. Teams will notice this; Chelsea tends to sit back and let opponents find spaces, as Arsenal did today."
Chelsea’s approach has involved conceding possession and relying on counter-attacks. Their only real threat on the break during the match was from Pedro Neto on the right flank.
Key Absences and Missed Opportunities in Midfield
The main problem stems from the absence of Moises Caicedo, sidelined with an unspecified injury just 11 minutes into a substitute appearance against Brighton. Caicedo had been remarkably consistent, missing only two matches over three seasons before this setback.
Xabi Alonso said, "It's not a long-term issue, but we need to be careful. Probably we rushed him back last week, and I don't want to repeat that mistake."
Speculation surrounds whether Chelsea doubted Caicedo's fitness during their chase for central midfield reinforcements on deadline day. Attempts to sign Lamine Camara for £47 million were halted at the last minute by Monaco, frustrating Chelsea officials. They also saw bids as high as £64 million rejected for Bournemouth's Alex Scott and were blocked from signing Manu Kone by Roma's coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
Despite selling Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a British-record £125 million on deadline day without a direct replacement, Chelsea claimed satisfaction with their summer dealings and confidence in existing squad members.
Caicedo joins Jordan Henderson on the sidelines; Henderson is still recovering from a broken arm sustained at the World Cup. Meanwhile, young midfielder Valentin Barco, signed from Strasbourg, has not featured in favor of Gusto, who started in midfield in all three Premier League matches.
When Gusto played in midfield, Chelsea recorded only 25.6% possession during their 4-3 win over Brighton—their lowest since data collection began in 2003-04.
If Chelsea's midfielders stay fit and Caicedo recovers quickly, five midfielders could suffice for a season without European midweek fixtures, as Alonso suggested pre-match. So far, Chelsea has relied on attacking talents like Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, and Joao Pedro across three games.
Still, conceding seven goals in those matches has prompted Alonso to say, "We want to be tighter."
Alonso Remains Hopeful Amid Challenges
Chelsea showed promising signs despite the loss. Club-record signing Morgan Rogers scored early, becoming the first player since Eden Hazard in 2018-19 to score or assist in each of Chelsea's first three Premier League games.
This performance ranks among Chelsea’s better efforts against Arsenal during a 10-game winless streak versus their London rivals. The Blues face a daunting 33-point gap to close after finishing 10th last season.
Alonso said after the match, "We came to win. We knew we were close, but things went their way. It hurts and we’re disappointed. This is only the first defeat, and it won’t affect our mood or mindset."
Despite capturing Rogers ahead of Arsenal, Chelsea remains behind the benchmark set by their London rivals and the rest of the Premier League. Their failure to secure a midfield replacement on deadline day might prove a vulnerability.
Alonso referred to the summer as "phase one". Should Caicedo's return fail to settle midfield concerns, Chelsea may face questions about not replacing Fernandez sooner and might revisit the market in January.
