Five Midfielders Chelsea Could Target to Replace Enzo Fernández in January

Chelsea's Search for Enzo Fernández's Replacement

After Enzo Fernández left Chelsea for Manchester City on Deadline Day, the Blues were left without a midfield reinforcements. The Argentine's move capped off a summer of massive outgoing transfers totaling an incredible $700 million (£519 million), a record in football history. Chelsea's failure to secure a replacement before the transfer window closed leaves them with a thin midfield, as was clear during their 2–1 loss to Arsenal when Xabi Alonso’s improvised midfield setup struggled.

January could see Chelsea pursuing a marquee signing to fill this gap. Although winter deals often come at a premium, Chelsea has previously been willing to spend heavily in January, as seen with Fernández himself in 2023. Here are five midfielders who might be on Chelsea’s radar to replace him.

Frenkie De Jong

Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona is regarded among the best central midfielders when fit. Despite his serious knee injury—a partially torn MCL sustained during the 2026 World Cup—De Jong is aiming for an October return after opting against surgery so far. Barcelona boasts one of the deepest midfields globally, with new signings like Rodri pushing De Jong out of the starting lineup. Given recurring injuries and fierce competition from players like Gavi and Marc Bernal, Barcelona might consider selling De Jong if he proves fit again. Chelsea had interest in him in 2022, and the Dutchman could be a bold but valuable January target.

Manu Koné

Chelsea showed interest in French midfielder Manu Koné during the summer. The Blues reportedly made an offer around $70.2 million (£52 million) plus winger Jamie Gittens on loan, but Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini blocked the move. Koné, 25, is known for his tough tackling, ball recovery, and ability to carry the ball forward, making him a perfect partner for Moisés Caicedo in a double-pivot midfield. Chelsea might revisit Koné’s situation in January, especially if Roma’s stance softens or their season starts to falter.

Adam Wharton

Adam Wharton, a rising talent from Crystal Palace, has attracted attention from major Premier League clubs and even Real Madrid. The 22-year-old midfielder is technically skilled and progressive, always seeking to break lines and advance play. His style resembles Fernández’s, offering a good complement to Caicedo. With his growing reputation, Crystal Palace might struggle to keep him beyond January, and Chelsea may have to compete strongly to secure his signature.

Lamine Camara

Lamine Camara nearly joined Chelsea on Deadline Day, but AS Monaco pulled out at the last moment after complications involving Folarin Balogun’s potential sale. Chelsea had agreed personal terms with Camara for a six-year deal, and he demonstrated his quality shortly after by dominating a match against Paris Saint-Germain. Although relations between the clubs might be tense now, Chelsea could attempt another bid in the winter for the 22-year-old midfielder known for his athleticism and defensive strength combined with solid ball skills.

Alex Scott

Chelsea previously offered Bournemouth $86 million (£64 million) for young midfielder Alex Scott, but the club refused to sell. Scott, 23, is a modern midfielder who excels defensively and creatively, shaping Bournemouth’s style. With Bournemouth having sold star winger Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City in January last year, Scott might be their next big winter sale. He is also highly sought after in England and could become a $100 million signing. Chelsea would likely need to pay a significant fee but would acquire a player with huge potential.
