Chelsea Faces Key Absences in Carabao Cup Against Luton Town

Chelsea will have to do without two of their key men when they step into Carabao Cup action against Luton Town on Thursday night.

Xabi Alonso confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra are both ruled out of the second-round tie, extending their absence after missing the opening-day Premier League win over Fulham.

“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it [against Luton],” Alonso said, drawing a clear line under any late fitness hopes.

Caicedo’s situation offers a flicker of optimism. Alonso admitted there is a chance the midfielder could return in time for the weekend’s league fixture, though that depends on how he comes through further checks. Palestra’s outlook is less certain, with the Chelsea boss stressing the need for more assessment before any timeline can be set.

The rest of the squad, though, brings better news. Everyone who featured on Monday is available, with Cole Palmer “absolutely fine” after coming through unscathed. There was also a nod to youth and opportunity: Penders has been drafted into the squad and will travel with the group, giving the youngster a genuine shot at minutes in a competition that often opens the door for emerging talent.

Two important absentees, one cup hurdle, and a manager juggling fitness and form at the very start of the season. The Carabao Cup may sit in the shadows of bigger prizes, but for Alonso’s Chelsea, nights like this can quickly shape the story of a campaign.
