Arsenal Targets Manchester United’s Sam Scanlon for Youth Rebuild

Arsenal are set to raid Manchester United’s academy again, with 19-year-old winger Sam Scanlon poised to swap Old Trafford for north London as part of the club’s aggressive youth rebuild.

Standard Sport understands Scanlon will join Arsenal on a free transfer, with United inserting a 40 per cent sell-on clause into the deal. His medical is done, and the move is expected to be completed within the next 48 hours.

This is not a signing for the loan army. Arsenal have no immediate plans to send Scanlon out. He will start with the Under-21s, but the message around the move is clear: he is coming to force his way into Mikel Arteta’s thinking as quickly as he can.

At 19, Scanlon already has something most academy prospects can only dream of – senior international experience. He has been capped 24 times by Gibraltar, exposure that has sharpened his game and drawn attention from across Europe, particularly in Spain.

Sevilla tried to land him permanently in January. United resisted, choosing instead to send him to Swindon Town on loan for the second half of the season. Arsenal have now stepped in to make a longer-term play.

The move comes with strong internal backing. New Arsenal Under-21 head coach David Horseman worked briefly with Scanlon at United and pushed hard for the club to bring him in. His recommendation has been echoed by Chris Perkins, who knew the winger from his time at Derby, where Scanlon came through the age groups before joining United in 2021.

Scanlon becomes the latest youngster to make the Old Trafford-to-Emirates switch. He follows defender Habeeb Ogunneye, who has also joined Arsenal on a free transfer, again with a significant sell-on clause attached.

These are not isolated moves. Arsenal have shifted gear at Under-21 level, intent on raising the standard of the group and creating a stronger bridge to the first team. The recruitment drive has been steady and targeted rather than scattergun.

On Tuesday, 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed he will leave Blackburn after Arsenal finally secured his signature. With Tyjon up front, Ogunneye at the back and now Scanlon out wide, the picture around Arsenal’s next generation is starting to sharpen.

The question now is simple: which of them will be the first to break through under Arteta and turn this academy reset into Premier League minutes?
