Chelsea Faces Key Injury Setbacks Ahead of Luton Town Clash

Chelsea’s season is barely underway, but the juggling act has already started.

Fresh from a chaotic 3-2 win at Fulham to open their Premier League campaign, Alonso now has to steer Chelsea through a Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night without two of his key men.

Injury setbacks cloud early momentum

Moises Caicedo and summer signing Palestra both missed the west London derby at Craven Cottage and will again be absent for the visit of Luton. For a coach keen to rotate and protect his squad in August, it is a significant blow.

Palestra, recruited from Atalanta in the recent window, faces an unclear return date. Caicedo is understood to be slightly closer to a comeback, but not close enough for Thursday.

Alonso revealed after the Fulham win that both players had picked up minor problems during training in the build-up to the opener. The message was clear: early-season caution over short-term gain.

“During the week they had a few setbacks,” he said in his pre-Luton press conference. “With Moi – and with any [player] – we don’t want to take too much risk. They weren’t ready to play tonight.”

The stance has not changed.

“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it,” Alonso confirmed. “Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend, but we need to check a little bit more with Marco. Otherwise everyone from Monday is okay, Cole [Palmer] is absolutely fine.”

So Chelsea go into their first cup tie of the season with options trimmed in midfield and attack, and a manager unwilling to gamble with fitness so early in the campaign.

Goalkeeper question looms over cup tie

The injuries are only one strand of the story. The other sits in goal.

Robert Sanchez came under scrutiny for aspects of his display against Fulham, and that has fuelled talk that Chelsea could move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez before the transfer deadline. With speculation swirling, attention has turned to backup keeper Mike Penders, who could be handed a chance against Luton.

Alonso kept his cards close to his chest.

“Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity,” he said. “We will decide and then I am giving the team tomorrow to the players, so I prefer to respect that they know first.”

A quiet hint, but no confirmation. The Carabao Cup has often been a stage for second-choice goalkeepers to stake a claim. Whether Penders gets that platform remains one of the more intriguing subplots of the night.

Enzo stays locked in amid transfer noise

One selection call is far more straightforward.

Enzo Fernandez is expected to feature despite persistent links with Manchester City. Rumours continue to circle, but Alonso has been impressed with how the World Cup winner has handled the noise.

“Enzo, yes we expect him to be involved,” the manager said. “He is training really well, he’s a good professional, and he will be involved.”

The Argentine’s name has been doing the rounds for weeks, yet inside Cobham his focus has not wavered. For a Chelsea side already missing Caicedo, his presence in midfield is non-negotiable.

Long-term absentees and a tightrope schedule

Beyond the immediate doubts, Chelsea are still without Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha. Both missed the opening-day win and remain sidelined, though the club expects them to rejoin full training within the next two weeks.
