Jack Grealish in Talks for Sunderland Loan Move from Manchester City

Sunderland have opened negotiations with Manchester City over a loan move for Jack Grealish, with an option to buy being discussed for next year when his contract at the Etihad is due to expire, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

The deal on the table is not a simple one. Sunderland want City to continue paying part of Grealish’s wages, a crucial piece of the puzzle if the move is to fit within their financial structure. City, for their part, are looking at a player who cost €117 million in 2021 and has since slipped down the pecking order.

From record signing to expendable asset

Grealish arrived at Manchester City as a statement signing, the most expensive British player of his generation, and quickly stacked up medals. Multiple league titles followed, capped by the Champions League triumph in 2023. Across all competitions, he has made 159 appearances for the club.

Yet the trajectory has been clear. His minutes have dwindled season by season. Under former manager Pep Guardiola, Grealish increasingly watched from the bench, with Guardiola stressing that the calls were not personal, simply football decisions. Now under Enzo Maresca, the pattern has hardened.

Maresca does not view Grealish as a regular starter. So far this campaign he has only turned to the midfielder twice – in the Community Shield against Arsenal and at home to Bournemouth. For a player of his pedigree, that is a brutal comedown.

Everton loan, injury setback

Last season, City sent Grealish on loan to Everton, where he finally found a run of games and responsibility. In 22 appearances he produced two goals and six assists, offering flashes of the creativity and technical sharpness that once made him the heartbeat of Aston Villa.

Then came the break in momentum. A stress fracture in his foot in January cut his season short and forced him into rehabilitation just as he looked settled again. By the time he returned to City, his role had shrunk even further.

That is the backdrop to Sunderland’s move: a gifted midfielder in need of minutes and a club willing to build around his talent if the numbers add up.

Sunderland’s wider rebuild

Grealish is not the only target. Sunderland are also pushing to bring in Igor Paixão from Olympique Marseille, with Sky Sports reporting that a bid has already gone in for the Brazilian.

It paints a clear picture of Sunderland’s intent. They are not just looking for depth; they are trying to reshape their attacking options with players who can change games on their own.

For City, allowing Grealish to leave on loan with an option to buy would mark the end of one of the most expensive and scrutinised chapters in their recent transfer history. For Sunderland, it could be the signing that alters the club’s ceiling.
