Liverpool's Interest in Ismaila Sarr: Injury Update

Liverpool’s pursuit of Ismaila Sarr has hit a pause, but not for the reasons the rumour mill has been churning out.

After their move for Yankuba Minteh fell through, Liverpool turned to Crystal Palace and lodged a £50 million offer for Sarr. The bid lit up the gossip columns, quickly followed by claims the winger was refusing to train in an attempt to force a move to Anfield or Galatasaray.

Crystal Palace manager Sage has shut that down.

“He is really in pain”

Speaking to the media, Sage was clear: Sarr is not on strike. He is injured.

“Ismaila Sarr is injured. He is in pain with his groin - that’s why you didn’t see him [train] with us today,” Sage said. “He is in individual training because he is really in pain with his groin. But we’ll prepare him, he needs time.”

The 28-year-old has already missed Palace’s Premier League opener against Everton and will also be absent for Friday night’s meeting with Manchester City. For a player at the centre of such intense transfer attention, his absence was always going to raise questions. Sage moved quickly to answer them.

Transfer noise and a £50m bid

Liverpool’s interest has been concrete enough to test Palace’s resolve. A £50 million offer is on the table, and the winger’s name has been thrown into every conversation about late-window business. Speculation has only grown with links to Galatasaray and Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal hovering in the background.

Sage, though, is convinced Sarr remains committed to Palace and the three years left on his contract.

“It’s always difficult for a player when your name is associated with a club like Liverpool,” he said. “For the moment, the most important thing is to understand the player is not able to play and is in treatment, and what happens with his potential future is really far from me.”

The message was simple: Sarr’s body, not his mindset, is keeping him out of the team.

Private talks and public trust

Behind the scenes, Sage has moved to protect his player from the noise. He held private talks with Sarr this week, aiming to steady the winger as links to Liverpool and Al-Hilal swirl around him with the window edging towards its close.

“I understand that for everybody to have this kind of contact is difficult, because you hesitate a lot,” Sage admitted. “But for the moment, he is with us. He is under contract. He is injured and maybe you can make a link between his injury and the situation. But for me, he is honest and I have no problem with that.”

The suggestion that Sarr might be feigning or exaggerating his groin issue to engineer a move clearly irritates the Palace boss. He is adamant the forward’s discomfort is real, his professionalism intact.

So the situation stands on a knife-edge typical of late August. Liverpool have made their move. Palace are standing firm. Sarr is stuck in the middle, working alone on a sore groin while the clock ticks on a window that could yet reshape the next three years of his career.
