Cheick Doucoure Set for Long-Awaited Return to Crystal Palace After 20 Months Out

Cheick Doucoure Ready to Return After Lengthy Injury Spell

Crystal Palace midfielder Cheick Doucoure is set to make his first senior appearance in nearly 20 months, ending a tough period marked by serious injuries. The Malian star will feature in the upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Middlesbrough, according to manager Pierre Sage.

The Challenging Road Back

Doucoure, 26, who was named Crystal Palace Player of the Year in the 2022-23 season, has battled through a series of injuries that halted his progress. His troubles began with a ruptured Achilles during a 2-1 loss to Luton Town in November 2023. After returning to action for 13 games, he suffered a torn meniscus in January 2025.

Having regained fitness with the Under-21 team at the end of last season and completing a full pre-season without setbacks, Doucoure now reenters the first-team picture. His absence has been felt deeply, especially since Liverpool showed interest in signing him before his injury struggles.

Manager Pierre Sage Shares Doucoure’s Reaction

Sage expressed joy about having Doucoure back. He described the midfielder’s reaction when told he would play again as priceless. “His smile was incredible,” Sage said. “It was like I gave him $1 million. That’s the kind of passion we want — love for football and a strong desire to return with the team.” Doucoure is expected to get some minutes in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round match against Middlesbrough, marking his first competitive game since Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over Leicester City on January 15, 2025.

Careful Squad Rotation Ahead

Sage plans to integrate Doucoure carefully, avoiding too many changes to the lineup. He prefers stability, even in cup games, saying large rotations often hurt team coordination. “We have to respect the players' efforts and give them chances to show what they can do,” Sage noted. The club aims to advance far in the Carabao Cup and intends to take the competition seriously.

Palace Seek to Regain Momentum

Currently placed 13th in the Premier League after one win and two losses, Crystal Palace hope Doucoure’s return will help steady their campaign. The Eagles enjoyed trophy success recently, winning the FA Cup in 2024-25, the FA Community Shield in 2025, and the UEFA Conference League last season.

After facing Middlesbrough, Palace will focus back on the Premier League, hosting Ipswich Town as they look to build on their recent 3-2 victory over Fulham.
