Why Champions League Matches Are Played on Thursdays During Opening Week
Champions League Matches on Thursdays: The Reason Behind the Shift
The sight of Champions League games taking place on a Thursday night might surprise fans used to the Europa League or Conference League filling that slot. Traditionally, Thursdays have been reserved for those competitions, often sparking jokes about 'Thursday night football' on social media.
Since the 2024-25 season, and again this year, Europe's top clubs have stepped into this Thursday evening timeslot—but only for one week at the start of the campaign. UEFA's scheduling has a clear purpose tied to the new league-phase format introduced with the competition’s expansion.
This change first appeared in September 2024 and returned for the current season as the tournament began its opening matchday. Here we explore why Thursday nights are part of the Champions League schedule during the initial matchdays, how UEFA manages exclusive weeks across all three club tournaments, and why this remains a temporary departure from long-established tradition.
Expansion from 32 to 36 Teams Drives Scheduling Changes
The biggest shift behind these changes is the growth of the tournament from 32 to 36 teams. Instead of traditional groups, all teams now compete in a single league phase where each club plays eight matches—four at home and four away—against eight different opponents. All results feed into one unified table without separate groups.
After those eight rounds, the top eight teams progress directly to the round of 16, while teams placed ninth through 24th enter a playoff to determine who joins them. The rest are eliminated.
With 36 teams playing simultaneously on the first matchday instead of the old group structure that staggered fixtures across multiple days, UEFA faced a tough scheduling puzzle. To handle the large number of games, the solution was to spread the opening round across three nights rather than two.
How UEFA’s Exclusive Weeks Work
Each UEFA club competition gets one exclusive matchweek free from clashes with the others. For the Champions League, this exclusive week happens on matchday one. For the remainder of the season, Champions League games happen only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while Thursdays belong to the Europa League and Conference League.
During the first week, UEFA breaks from tradition and occupies Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with Champions League fixtures. This gives enough time between matches and allows broadcasters to avoid overlaps.
Once that week is over, Thursdays go back to hosting the Europa League and Conference League, with the Champions League sticking to Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the rest of the season.
The Europa League then gets its own exclusive opening week, running Wednesday to Thursday before settling into a Thursday-only pattern. The Conference League holds all its matches on Thursdays, including a special standalone Thursday for the final league fixtures.
