Champions League Rising Stars: Young Talents to Watch in 2026-27
The 2026-27 Champions League kicks off this week, bringing together 36 teams packed with promising young players ready to shine on Europe's biggest stage. While the usual stars will grab the headlines, a fresh group of gifted youngsters under 22 are poised to make their mark.
Here are some of the most exciting prospects likely to stand out this season.
Yan Diomande (Real Madrid)
At just 19, Yan Diomande has stepped onto the grand European stage after a record 120 million euro move from RB Leipzig to Real Madrid. After winning Bundesliga Rookie of the Season with 12 goals in 2025-26, the Ivory Coast winger is expected to bring creativity and flair to Jose Mourinho's attack. Though he has only featured as a substitute for 83 minutes so far, Mourinho urges patience as Diomande competes with Vinicius Junior, Brahim Diaz, and Arda Guler for a spot on the wings. His confidence and skill make him a player to watch as Madrid chase a 16th Champions League title.
Ayyoub Bouaddi (Manchester City)
Manchester City strengthened their midfield with the arrival of 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for a Premier League record fee of 85.6 million euros. Known for his calmness, vision, and precise passing deep in midfield, Bouaddi impressed at the 2026 World Cup, especially in Morocco’s draw against Brazil. Coach Enzo Maresca is easing him into the squad but expects Bouaddi to become a key player alongside new signings Enzo Fernandez and Elliot Anderson. Before turning 19 in October, Bouaddi already racked up 96 senior appearances, including 25 in European competitions.
Max Dowman (Arsenal)
The 2026-27 season may be the breakthrough year for 16-year-old Max Dowman at Arsenal. Last season, Dowman became the youngest-ever Champions League participant at 15 years and 308 days, breaking Youssoufa Moukoko’s record. A talented right-winger who can also play centrally, Dowman scored five goals in six UEFA Youth League games last season. He faces tough competition from Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke but is expected to get more first-team opportunities under Mikel Arteta. Arsenal fans will be eager to see him develop as the club aims high in Europe.
Ibrahim Mbaye (Aston Villa)
Aston Villa made a splash by signing 18-year-old forward Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for 47 million euros. Mbaye, who scored for Senegal at the 2026 World Cup against France, brings speed, dribbling skills, and a sharp eye for goal. His relentless pressing suits Unai Emery’s style perfectly. Having Champions League experience already, Mbaye could become an important attacker for Villa and looks set to form a partnership with fellow new signing Nicolas Jackson.
Nico Paz (Como)
At 21, Nico Paz has become the standout star for Como, a team making its Champions League debut after finishing fourth in Serie A last season. The playmaker notched 13 goals and 8 assists in 40 matches during 2025-26 before moving permanently from Real Madrid for 60 million euros. Seen as a potential heir to Lionel Messi’s No.10 role for Argentina, Paz combines creativity with power and defensive work rate, operating effectively between the lines or as a box-to-box midfielder. His performances will be crucial if Como hopes to challenge established clubs in Europe.
