Champions League Matchday Preview: Barcelona, PSG, and Arsenal Set to Shine

The Champions League is back on a Wednesday night, and it returns with a full-throttle slate: Liverpool against Atletico Madrid at Anfield, PSG beginning their title defence in Paris, Barcelona reopening the (new) Camp Nou to Europe, and Arsenal stepping into Naples with serious ambitions. No easing into this season.

Below, a look at each tie – and where the balance seems to tilt.

FC Barcelona vs Feyenoord

Camp Nou lights back on, Champions League anthem back in the air. Barcelona’s rebuilt home is ready, and so is Hansi Flick’s side.

They’ve torn through the early weeks of La Liga. Four wins from four. Five goals scored in three of those matches. This is a team that doesn’t have a classic tier-one No. 9, yet looks anything but blunt. Raphinha is in outrageous form with six goals in four games, while Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez have chipped in with four each. Flick has them moving the ball quickly, snapping open low blocks, and flooding the box with runners.

Frenkie de Jong is the major absentee, which always matters, but Barcelona’s squad depth softens the blow. With additions like Rodri and Anthony Gordon now part of the starting XI, the Catalans suddenly have a different gear in transition and on the flanks. At home, they will expect to dominate.

Feyenoord arrive unbeaten and confident. The Dutch champions have their own rising talents in 22-year-olds Luciano Valente and Gjivai Zechiel, both pushing for full national team recognition. Their form gives them reason to believe they can trade punches for a spell.

But this is a brutal assignment. Barcelona, in this mood, at this venue, usually find a way to turn pressure into a flood.

Prediction: FC Barcelona 4–1

Stuttgart vs Viking

Stuttgart’s season so far has been a study in extremes. Smashed 5–1 by Bayern Munich on opening weekend, then roaring back with a 4–1 win over Koln. The volatility is obvious, but so is the attacking punch.

Last season’s 4th-place finish in the Bundesliga wasn’t a fluke. Bilal El Khannouss, just 22, continues to grow into a standout wide threat, and Stuttgart’s front line can overwhelm teams when they click. They will be without Luca Jaquez, among others, but the core of their attacking structure remains intact.

Across from them stand Viking, making their first-ever appearance in the Champions League proper. They edged Dinamo Zagreb in the playoff round and arrive as champions of Norway, having edged Bodo/Glimt by a single point in a title race that underlined the league’s recent progress.

Their debut, though, is complicated. Veton Berisha is out, and at least two more first-choice starters will miss this historic night. For a squad already punching above its traditional weight, those absences bite.

Stuttgart, at home, with superior squad value and a proven attacking ceiling, will be heavily backed. Norwegian football is climbing, and Viking will treat this as a measuring stick, but this feels like a step too far in week one.

Prediction: Stuttgart 3–1

PSG vs Slovan Bratislava

The defending champions return to the Champions League with a trophy on the shelf and a hangover in their legs.

PSG edged Aston Villa 2–1 in the UEFA Super Cup, but that’s where the early-season joy stopped. Defeat to Lens in the Trophee des Champions, draws with Rennes and Lille, and a loss to AS Monaco have left Luis Enrique’s side looking tired, short of rhythm, and strangely flat.

The squad, though, is still loaded. Ferran Torres arrived from Barcelona in the summer, joined by Ajax talent Mika Godts and Maghnes Akliouche. The real power, as ever, lies in the front line: Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian, one of the few genuine global stars who didn’t play at the World Cup, should be fresher than most and could be the sharpest blade on matchday one.

PSG’s collective form screams hangover, but their individual quality still terrifies.

Slovan Bratislava, giants at home in Slovakia, step back onto the major European stage under Yaya Toure. Domestic form has been poor lately, and this is a harsh environment in which to reset. Their squad is an eclectic mix, with veteran forwards Andraz Sporar and Tigran Barseghyan leading the line, while PSG can call on internationals like Willian Pacho at the back.

This has the feel of a one-sided script. PSG should dominate the ball, pull Bratislava apart, and eventually find the gaps.

Prediction: PSG 4–0

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid

Anfield under the lights, a new man in the Liverpool dugout, and a familiar European tension in the air.

Andoni Iraola opens his Champions League campaign as Liverpool manager against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, in a meeting of two sides that see themselves as contenders but sit just below the tournament’s elite tier.

Liverpool’s Premier League start has been steady rather than spectacular: two draws, then a win over Ipswich. They head into Europe missing key pieces. Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo are unavailable for this competition, while Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley are sidelined through injury. At centre-back, Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo is set to start, giving Iraola a high-level defensive anchor.

The main selection dilemma lies on the right wing. Does he go with the headline signing, Bradley Barcola, or the reliable new arrival Victor Munoz from Osasuna? Barcola brings explosiveness and expectation; Munoz offers solidity and familiarity with Spanish opposition. It’s a genuine call.

Atletico arrive with a refreshed squad and a very public problem. Julian Alvarez, a genuine star in La Liga and across Europe, pushed hard for a move to Barcelona. The club refused. The window shut. He stayed. But he is deeply unhappy with Simeone, and that tension has stripped away his status as an automatic starter.

At the back, Atletico strengthened with Cristian Romero from Spurs and Alejandro Grimaldo from Leverkusen, while Jonathan David (on loan from Juventus), Kang-in Lee from PSG, and Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP add energy and invention further forward. It’s a group built to go deep in the knockout rounds.

Yet the cracks showed at the weekend. Atletico conceded three in a defeat to Athletic Bilbao, their first loss of the season, and the defensive security that usually defines Simeone’s sides wobbled.

Liverpool’s form isn’t convincing, but Anfield is Anfield. Atletico know the script on these nights: sit deep, frustrate, counter, and leave with something. With both teams still searching for their true level, a cagey draw feels entirely on the cards.

Prediction: 1–1 draw

Sporting CP vs Galatasaray

Two heavyweights from outside the top five leagues, one finely balanced tie.

Sporting CP host Galatasaray in Lisbon in what looks like one of the standout games of the night. The Portuguese side have started strongly in Liga Portugal, with a 4–1–0 record and a young, energetic squad that plays on the front foot. Colombian international Luis Suarez and teenager Flavio Goncalves have emerged as early-season standouts, reflecting a team whose average starting age is just 24.8.

Across the pitch, Galatasaray bring experience and scars. They are 3–1–0 in the Turkish league and were leaning heavily on Victor Osimhen, who already has six goals this season. His absence through injury is a major blow. Without their star striker, responsibility shifts to Brazilian attacking midfielder Gabriel Sara to drive the threat between the lines and in the final third.

The contrast is stark: Sporting’s youth and intensity against one of the most veteran squads in Europe, with Galatasaray’s average age sitting at 29.3. Over 90 minutes in Lisbon, those legs will be tested.

Sporting, at home and in form, should have the edge, but this has all the ingredients of a gripping, high-stakes contest.

Napoli vs Arsenal

Arsenal arrive in Naples carrying expectation, scars, and a growing sense of inevitability.

Last season’s Champions League ended in heartbreak with a final defeat to PSG. This season, major broadcasters and pundits openly tip Mikel Arteta’s side to go one better. The early signs back that up. Arsenal brushed aside Manchester City to win the Community Shield, then opened the Premier League with three wins from three, including statement victories over Aston Villa and Chelsea.

They will be without William Saliba and Jurrien Timber at the back, two significant defensive absences. But the midfield has been reinforced with Bruno Guimaraes, who will feature either from the start or off the bench, adding control and bite in the centre. On the wing, Christos Tzolis, signed from Brugge, has stepped straight into the starting XI, giving Arsenal another direct, goal-minded wide option.

Napoli, by contrast, limp into this one. Consecutive defeats in Serie A to Como and Inter Milan – two of Italy’s best last season – have dented confidence. They do at least have home advantage at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, but they will still go into the night as underdogs.

Kevin De Bruyne, now 35, may start from the bench as Napoli manage his minutes, while Scott McTominay remains unavailable after heart surgery. Those absences strip away experience and physical presence in midfield, exactly where Arsenal like to seize control.

Everything points one way. Arsenal have momentum, depth, and a clear identity. Napoli are searching for answers.
