Inter Milan Secures £30m Deal for Djed Spence

Inter Milan have agreed a £30m deal to sign England defender Djed Spence from Tottenham, a move that hands the full-back the Serie A stage his World Cup form demanded.

The agreement includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause, with Spence given permission to travel to Italy for a medical while the final details were thrashed out. Those talks are now complete, with the total package set at £30m.

Spence, one of England’s standout performers in their third-place finish at this summer’s World Cup, was staring at another season on the fringes in north London. Pedro Porro is firmly established as Spurs’ first-choice right-back, while the left side is crowded with Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Souza and Ben Davies all able to operate there.

Inter, by contrast, have been hunting a new right wing-back. Their pursuit of Al Ittihad’s Moussa Diaby stalled, and attention quickly swung to Spence, whose profile and recent form made him an obvious fit for Simone Inzaghi’s system.

The 24-year-old still had three years left on his Tottenham contract, with an option for a further year, but was keen to go. His appetite for a return to Italy was sharpened by a successful six-month loan spell with Genoa from January 2024, where he adapted quickly to the league and the culture.

Tottenham signed Spence from Middlesbrough in July 2022 in a deal worth up to £20m, and the move to Inter delivers a healthy profit on that investment.

Sky Sports News reporter Mark McAdam summed up the mixed emotions for Spurs supporters.

“A player that Spurs fans will say they have seen his brilliance in flashes. You saw his brilliance at the World Cup with England,” he said. “They may also think it is frustrating. They paid £12.5m for him from Middlesbrough in 2022, a deal that Daniel Levy did. They are getting more than two times what they paid for him.

“But they will also say it doesn't feel like a lot of money for a player who could be so key for us.

“Spurs have been preparing for this and have irons in the fire for his potential replacement.”

For Inter, it is a decisive move to refresh a key position. For Spence, it is a chance to turn those flashes of brilliance into something more permanent, on a stage that will not wait long for him to deliver.
