Brentford Nears Signing of El Hadji Malick Diouf for £40m

Brentford are closing in on a major defensive signing after reaching a verbal agreement with West Ham to bring in El Hadji Malick Diouf in a deal worth up to £40m.

The 21-year-old Senegal left-back will cost an initial £35m, with a further £5m tied to add-ons. West Ham have accepted Brentford’s offer and Diouf has been given the green light to undergo a medical, clearing the way for one of the standout moves of the window in his position.

Only a year ago, West Ham paid £19m to sign Diouf from Slavia Prague. Now they stand to bank a sizeable profit on a player who, despite relegation, emerged as one of their brighter performers last season. He featured 34 times in all competitions for the Hammers and contributed five assists, often driving them forward from deep on the left.

His departure has felt inevitable in recent weeks. Diouf started West Ham’s Championship opener against Burnley but has been left out of the last two matchday squads as talks gathered pace. The omission underlined what was happening behind the scenes: serious negotiations, then a breakthrough.

For Brentford, this is not an opportunistic swoop. Diouf has been their top defensive target all summer, a long-running pursuit that briefly stalled before being revived this week. Once the discussions reopened, the deal accelerated quickly.

If completed, Diouf will return to the Premier League immediately after going down with West Ham last season. The contrast is stark. While the Hammers slipped to 18th and dropped into the Championship, Brentford surged under Keith Andrews, finishing ninth and missing out on European football only on goal difference.

Brentford's Summer Signings

Andrews has wasted no time trying to turn that near-miss into something more. Diouf is set to become Brentford’s fifth signing of the summer, following striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre-back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony. It is a clear statement: Brentford intend to build a squad with depth and quality across the pitch, not just at the top end.

Diouf arrives with growing pedigree at international level as well. After breaking into the Senegal setup last year, he went on to feature four times at the World Cup this summer, gaining experience on the biggest stage and sharpening the aggressive, front-foot style that has made him so attractive to Premier League clubs.

For West Ham, the sale brings in significant funds as they reshape a squad now tasked with fighting for promotion. For Brentford, it answers a key question in their build-up to the new campaign: who would anchor the left side of their defence as they push again for Europe?
