Benfica Firm on Pavlidis Amid Barcelona Interest

Barcelona’s search for a centre-forward has reached Lisbon, but Benfica have made one thing crystal clear: Vangelis Pavlidis leaves only for an offer they simply cannot refuse.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Portuguese giants have no intention of cashing in on their Greek striker unless a truly irresistible bid lands on the table. Not a good offer. Not a fair price. Something that blows them away.

For now, that has not arrived.

Barcelona look beyond their first choice

Barcelona’s priority remains Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, yet that pursuit has turned increasingly tense. Atletico have gone on the offensive, filing an official complaint with FIFA and accusing the Catalan club of harassment in their attempts to lure the striker away.

That escalation has forced Barcelona to widen the net. New names have entered the frame, and among them sits Pavlidis, 27, a more discreet but intriguing option for the final month of the summer window.

He fits the profile: a penalty-box striker with a proven eye for goal, entering what should be his peak years. But Benfica are not behaving like a club eager to sell.

Benfica unmoved, bids absent

As reported in Spain, the Benfica board consider a Pavlidis departure highly unlikely. Their stance is firm. It will not change unless a huge proposal arrives.

By late July, there was nothing of the sort. No official offer had reached the offices of Portugal’s most decorated club for the man who finished as their top scorer. Interest, yes. Concrete bids, no.

The message from Benfica is simple: anyone wanting Pavlidis must pay a premium, or not bother calling.

From anxiety to explosion

Behind the scenes, the striker’s own emotions have swung wildly over the summer.

Portuguese outlet A Bola, which is close to Benfica’s inner workings, reported that Pavlidis went on holiday anxious and frustrated. He doubted the club’s sporting project and suspected the board were ready to offload him to plug the financial gap left by missing out on the Champions League.

Those fears did not emerge in a vacuum. His form had dipped at a bad time. Between February and May, he scored just three goals, a drought that sharpened his concerns about his status and the club’s intentions.

Then the goals came back.

In the preliminary round of the Europa League, Pavlidis erupted with four goals, flipping the narrative and restoring his value in the most direct way a striker can. The timing could hardly be better for Benfica — or more awkward for suitors hoping for a discount.

Juventus walk away at €40m

Interest has not been limited to Spain. The same reports reveal that Juventus also explored a move for Pavlidis earlier in the window.

They asked the question. Benfica named their price: €40 million.

The answer from Turin was swift. Too high. Juventus stepped away, unwilling to meet a valuation that underlines how strongly Benfica intend to protect one of their key assets.

So the situation stands like this: Barcelona are searching, Atletico are fighting, Juventus have backed off, and Benfica are holding their ground.

If someone wants to change that, they know exactly what it will cost.
