Barcelona Pursues Julian Alvarez Amid Atletico Madrid's Stance
Barcelona refuse to step away from the Julian Alvarez chase, even as Atletico Madrid slam the door and throw the deadbolt.
The saga, already one of the summer’s defining transfer stories, has twisted again. Just when it looked as though Alvarez would stay put in the Spanish capital, the forward’s own words have blown the situation wide open. His public admission that he wants to leave Atletico and make the move to Camp Nou has dragged Barcelona back to the table with renewed conviction.
Atletico, though, are not blinking.
The message from the Metropolitano is blunt: they will not sell their star forward to a direct La Liga rival for anything below his €500 million release clause. No negotiation on that figure, no softening for a domestic opponent. Yet Barcelona keep pushing at a door that looks locked from the outside.
Barça readying a new strike
According to The Athletic, Barcelona are preparing a fresh offer for Alvarez once the World Cup ends. The expected proposal, around €130 million, would still fall miles short of the release clause, but the Catalan club insist they can put that money on the table.
Relations between the two clubs have frayed over recent weeks. Tension has grown as Barça have circled Atletico’s key man, and the Madrid side have bristled at the prospect of strengthening a rival. Even so, Barcelona believe Alvarez’s public stance has changed the dynamics enough to at least force a conversation.
From Barça’s point of view, they have already won a crucial battle. Alvarez has said out loud what they wanted to hear: he wants to leave Atletico and realise his dream of playing at Camp Nou. That declaration has become a strategic weapon. Barcelona see it as the lever that can prise open negotiations that Atletico have tried to shut down.
The plan is simple. Once the World Cup is over, they intend to test Atletico’s resolve with a concrete, high-end bid and lean hard on the player’s desire to move.
Sales before splashing
There is a catch. A familiar one.
Barcelona’s finances remain fragile, and a deal in the region of €130 million does not happen without sacrifices. To fund a move of that scale, the club would almost certainly need to sell again, trimming a squad that still carries both high wages and lingering accounting pressure.
The recruitment team also know they cannot focus solely on Alvarez. Defensive reinforcements are still on the agenda. That need partly explains why they stepped back from Marc Cucurella, who has instead joined Real Madrid. Barcelona liked the idea, admired the profile, but the numbers did not work unless they first moved on Alejandro Balde. Without that outgoing, the Cucurella option died.
The pattern is clear: every ambitious arrival demands a corresponding exit.
On that front, one domino is already lined up. Ansu Fati is expected to complete a move to Monaco, with the French club set to activate the €11 million buy option. It is not a blockbuster fee, but it is a step towards the liquidity Barcelona require if they are to turn their obsession with Alvarez into a formal bid.
So the stage is set. Atletico hold the line at €500 million. Barcelona prepare to swing with something closer to €130 million. In the middle stands Julian Alvarez, publicly pushing for the move he calls a dream.
Something has to give. The only question is which side blinks first.
