Barcelona Weigh Dumfries Move as Kounde's Future Uncertain

The season is barely over, but Barcelona are already deep in the mechanics of a summer that could reshape their back line as much as their attack.

The headline priority is clear: a new centre-forward. Deco and his sporting department are scouring the market for a No. 9 who can anchor the next project. Yet behind that search runs another storyline, one that could quietly define the structure of Hansi Flick’s team — the right-back position.

Right-back under review, Kounde in the spotlight

Jules Kounde has done the job. Often well, sometimes unevenly, rarely without debate. His performances at right-back and his own long-term fit in that role have left question marks inside the club. Barcelona are not pushing him out, but they are open to listening.

That single decision point opens the door to a familiar name: Denzel Dumfries.

According to FC Inter News, relayed by SPORT, the Inter Milan defender has reappeared on Barça’s radar. Dumfries is expected to be available for a permanent move this summer, and his camp is already working to place him at one of Europe’s elite. The Dutch international is ready to hear offers; the market is open, and so is he.

His new representatives have wasted no time. Meetings have already taken place with both Liverpool and Barcelona, two clubs that have tracked him before.

Deco informed, but Barça wait

Ali Barat, Dumfries’ new agent, sat down with Deco only a few days ago to lay out the player’s situation. The conversation put Dumfries back on the table at the Ciutat Esportiva, but it did not trigger an immediate push.

Barcelona are in a holding pattern here. Any concrete move for Dumfries hinges on what happens with Kounde. The club know it. The player’s camp know it. Dumfries himself understands that a path to Camp Nou only truly opens if a major sale takes place on the right side of the defence.

Inside the club, there is a clear sense that Kounde’s situation could unlock significant movement in the coming weeks. Multiple scenarios are in play: a big offer, a tactical reshuffle, or a decision to keep faith with the Frenchman. Each one carries a different consequence for Dumfries.

A €25 million window

The financial framework around Dumfries is straightforward but tight. The Inter defender has a €25 million release clause that becomes active in July. That clause, though, is not an open-ended invitation. It runs for just one month.

Any club that wants to sign him under those terms must move quickly and decisively during that specific window. Miss it, and negotiations return to Inter’s terms.

Barcelona know this rhythm all too well. Last summer, Jorge Mendes — then representing Dumfries — pushed hard to engineer a move to Catalonia. The deal never advanced, blocked by Barça’s salary restrictions rather than any lack of interest in the player.

The admiration has not disappeared. The financial constraints have not, either.

Cancelo first, exits next

Right now, Barcelona’s immediate focus on the flanks lies elsewhere. The club are working to reach an agreement with Al Hilal to keep João Cancelo, whose versatility on both sides of the defence gives Flick valuable flexibility.

The plan is simple on paper: secure Cancelo, then take stock. Once his future is clarified, Barcelona intend to assess outgoing transfers before they redraw their defensive line. Only then will they know if there is room — and budget — for another right-back of Dumfries’ profile.

Inside the sporting department, Dumfries has strong backing. Deco and Flick both value what he brings: power, athleticism, and a direct, dynamic presence in wide areas that could add a different edge to Barça’s play. His wages, crucially, are seen as manageable within the current salary structure.

The catch is structural, not personal. Dumfries only becomes a realistic signing if Barcelona execute an ambitious plan of departures. That likely means a major sale in defence, with Kounde at the centre of the discussion.

So the picture is set: a €25 million clause ticking down in July, a Dutch international ready to move, a club that admires him but must first sell before it buys.

If Barcelona do pull that trigger, the right flank next season could look very different — and so could Kounde’s career path.
