Bayern Munich Target Thiago as Striker Backup for Kane

Bayern Munich are back in the market. Just weeks after insisting their summer business was complete, the German champions have turned their attention to Brentford’s prolific Brazilian striker Thiago as they hunt for a specialist understudy to Harry Kane.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Bayern have already made their move, opening preliminary talks over a transfer and making their interest in the 22-goal forward clear. Thiago has emerged as the preferred option to ease the burden on Kane and offer genuine depth through the middle.

Thiago’s rise and the Brentford problem

Thiago is not a speculative punt. He is coming off a blistering Premier League campaign in which he played all 38 league games for Brentford, scoring 22 times and adding one assist. Only Erling Haaland finished ahead of him in the scoring charts.

That kind of production has inevitably drawn attention, but prising him away from the Gtech Community Stadium will be anything but straightforward. Thiago is tied to Brentford until June 2031, and reports indicate there is no release clause in his deal. Any negotiation will have to be done the hard way, with Brentford in a strong position and under no pressure to sell.

For Bayern, that complicates an increasingly urgent issue.

Kane needs cover, not competition

The need for a true centre-forward backup has sharpened since Nicolas Jackson’s departure. The Chelsea striker returned to Stamford Bridge after his loan spell in Munich, leaving Kane as the only natural No.9 in Vincent Kompany’s squad.

Kane remains the undisputed focal point. He is not being replaced, he is being protected. At 33, and with Bayern fighting on multiple fronts, the club knows it cannot afford to run him into the ground.

His numbers underline why. Last season, Kane produced a staggering 61 goals in 51 games across all competitions. Since arriving in Bavaria, he has scored 146 goals in 147 appearances, form that has already pushed him into “club legend” territory and justified every euro spent.

Kane is also expected to sit down with Bayern to discuss an extension to his current contract. His motivation is clear: he wants the Champions League, and he believes this Bayern squad is capable of delivering it.

From “done” business to a new priority

Not long ago, Bayern’s hierarchy were sending out a very different message. Sporting director Max Eberl had publicly suggested their recruitment was “done” for the summer, with the club satisfied that they had addressed key areas.

Nathaniel Brown arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt to strengthen the full-back positions. Ismael Saibari came in from PSV Eindhoven to inject more creativity and directness on the flanks. Around Säbener Straße, there was a sense that the squad was balanced enough to challenge domestically and in Europe without further big moves.

Then came the reality check: one injury or suspension to Kane, and Bayern’s entire attacking structure would be exposed. That is the gap Thiago has been earmarked to fill.

Internal options – and why Bayern are still looking

Kompany is not without alternatives if no deal materialises. Serge Gnabry has often operated through the middle and offers a more mobile, flexible option at centre-forward, especially in games where Bayern want fluid movement rather than a classic penalty-box striker.

But internal solutions only go so far when the stakes are as high as Bayern’s. Gnabry is more natural out wide, and reshuffling the frontline every time Kane needs a rest is hardly ideal for a team chasing the Champions League.

So the picture is clear. Bayern have a world-class No.9 in record-breaking form, a squad built to peak in Europe, and a glaring need for one more piece. Whether Brentford are willing to even open the door on Thiago could end up shaping how far the Bavarians can go this season.
