Barcelona’s Bardghji Faces Second ACL Tear as Transfer Dreams End

Barcelona’s summer plans took a brutal twist on Tuesday as the club confirmed that winger Bardghji has torn the ACL in his right knee, a serious injury that wipes out any chance of a move before the transfer window closes on September 1.

The 20-year-old Sweden international went down during a training session on Monday. Subsequent medical tests delivered the worst possible news: a complete ACL tear that will require surgery in the coming days and months of rehabilitation.

For Bardghji, the timing could hardly be worse. He had been preparing for a departure from the Catalan giants after talks with club management made it clear that his future lay away from Barcelona.

Told to find a new club – then struck down

In a stark twist, the injury arrived just days after coach Hansi Flick informed Bardghji he should look for a new team. According to ESPN, Flick was upfront with the youngster, explaining that first-team minutes would be extremely scarce at Barça in the upcoming season.

To minimise risk before a potential transfer, Barcelona had already taken precautions. Bardghji was left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, a protective measure designed to keep him fit while interest gathered pace.

It didn’t matter. The winger avoided the friendlies, only to suffer the devastating knee injury back on the training pitch on Monday.

Interest from across Europe stalls

Barcelona had been fielding enquiries from several European clubs, with Premier League sides among those monitoring the situation. Talks were expected to ramp up as the window moved into its final weeks, with a late-summer move looking increasingly likely.

The ACL tear ends all of that. With surgery imminent and a long spell on the sidelines ahead, any transfer this summer is now off the table.

Second major knee blow for Bardghji

This is not Bardghji’s first battle with this exact injury. He previously tore the ACL in the same right knee while playing for Copenhagen in 2024, suffering the same serious setback that now threatens to stall his momentum once again.

Barcelona signed the winger last summer from Copenhagen in a deal worth around €2 million. In his debut campaign in Spain, he made 28 appearances across all competitions and scored two goals, most of his minutes coming from the bench.

Even those limited opportunities were set to shrink. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi this summer pushed Bardghji further down the pecking order, reinforcing the sense that a move away was the logical next step in his career.

Season lost, focus turns to recovery

With the transfer window shutting on September 1, the severity of the injury shuts the door firmly on any exit this summer. Bardghji will undergo surgery in the coming days and then embark on a long rehabilitation process in Barcelona.

Instead of fighting for a fresh start elsewhere, he will spend the upcoming campaign recovering at the club, working to overcome a second major knee injury before his career has truly taken off.
