Waterford FC Advances to FAI Cup Quarter-Finals as Couto Shines

Waterford FC are into the quarter-finals of the Club Orange FAI Men's Cup, but they were made to sweat every second of a 2-1 win over a stubborn Athlone Town at the RSC.

A first-half header from Padraig Amond and a stunning second-half strike from Benny Couto kept alive Waterford’s bid for a first Cup triumph since 1980. It took resilience, and a big late save, to get them there.

Amond strikes, Athlone hit back

Waterford, as the Premier Division side, started with authority, owning the ball but finding little joy against a compact, disciplined Athlone back line. For all the early possession, Brendan Clarke’s goal stayed largely untroubled.

Then one long clearance changed the tone.

On 15 minutes, Kevin Long launched a booming ball from deep inside his own half that sent Jorgen Voilas racing clear down the right. The forward surged into space and shaped to pull the trigger, only for James Crawford to recover brilliantly and throw himself in front of the shot.

Athlone switched off from the corner. Waterford did not.

Couto, whose set-piece delivery has become a real weapon in recent weeks, whipped in a teasing ball. Amond read it perfectly, darted into the space and powered a header past Clarke from eight yards. Sixteen minutes gone, the Blues in front, the RSC finally breathing.

Athlone refused to fold. Jonathan Kehir forced Arlo Doherty into action soon after, a reminder that the First Division side had not come to simply survive.

On 25 minutes, they got their reward – and Waterford got their controversy.

From a Mark Connolly corner on the left, chaos erupted in the home penalty area. John Mahon appeared to be impeded as he tried to clear, but referee Alan Patchell waved away the appeals. The loose ball broke to Cillian Tollett and the striker reacted instantly, smashing his finish high into the roof of the net from close range.

1-1, and Athlone’s confidence surged.

Waterford, rattled, struggled to carve out clean chances for the remainder of the half. Athlone grew into the contest, snapped into tackles, and carried a threat on the break. The interval arrived with the sides level and the favourites very much in a game.

Couto curls Waterford back in front

Any nerves inside the RSC eased just five minutes after the restart.

From a throw-in on the right, Couto picked up possession and drove infield with purpose. Spotting a pocket of space, the defender wrapped his left foot around the ball and sent a gorgeous curling effort arcing beyond Clarke and into the far corner.

A full-back’s goal. A Cup goal. And a 2-1 lead that transformed the mood.

The strike injected belief back into Keith Long’s side. Waterford began to dictate, pinning Athlone deeper and asking far more questions of Clarke and his defence.

On 65 minutes, Couto almost turned provider again. This time he delivered from the left, swinging in a superb cross that Amond met with a deft glancing header at the near post. The ball drifted agonisingly wide, Clarke rooted.

The pressure kept coming. Three minutes later, substitutes Tommy Lonergan and Dean McMenamy combined neatly on the edge of the box, Lonergan laying the ball off for McMenamy to hit first time. His strike took a deflection and flashed just over the bar, Clarke beaten.

Athlone refuse to go away

Athlone, though, were never out of it. Aaron Connolly, influential in midfield, almost dragged them level on 71 minutes with a powerful drive from distance that forced Doherty into a sharp low save to his left.

Waterford should have killed it off soon after.

Conan Noonan did superbly near the byline to keep the ball alive and clipped a perfect cross onto the head of Hayden Cann. The defender thundered a header towards goal, only for Clarke to produce a brilliant reflex stop. McMenamy arrived first to the rebound but volleyed over from close range, a huge chance spurned.

The home crowd howled again when Clarke appeared to handle outside his area as Amond looked to burst through on goal, but play went on, the Athlone keeper surviving without sanction.

Clarke stayed busy in the closing stages, denying both Noonan and Voilas as Waterford hunted the third goal that would finally put the tie to bed.

Instead, the game almost swung the other way.

Deep into stoppage time, Sean Brennan let fly from distance, his fierce strike arrowing towards the top corner. Doherty flung himself across and got the faintest of fingertips to turn the ball over the bar – a magnificent save at a critical moment.

From the resulting corner, Waterford stood firm. No more drama. No more scares.

The whistle went, and with it a hard-earned place in the last eight.
