What Australia and Paraguay Must Do to Reach the World Cup Knockouts from Group D

With USA already securing the top spot in Group D and Turkey eliminated, the final match between Australia and Paraguay will decide who advances directly to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup.

Australia began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Turkey, while Paraguay suffered a heavy 4-1 loss to co-hosts USA. On the second matchday, Australia fell 2-0 to USA, whereas Paraguay managed a 1-0 win against Turkey despite playing with ten men.

New Rules Change Qualification Dynamics

The tournament has introduced a new tiebreaker system: when teams are level on points, the deciding factor is now the head-to-head record rather than goal difference. This change significantly impacts the battle for second place between Australia and Paraguay.

USA have already confirmed their place in the knockouts, and Turkey are out, leaving only Australia and Paraguay to compete for second. The winner of their encounter, reaching six points, will qualify outright. The loser, stuck at three points, will hope to be among the best eight third-placed teams to progress.

If the game ends in a draw, both teams finish on four points. In this case, goal difference comes into effect. Australia’s current goal difference stands at zero, while Paraguay's is minus two. With these figures unchanged by a draw, Australia would claim second place, and Paraguay would wait for other group outcomes to see if four points suffice to advance as one of the top third-placed teams.

Head-to-Head Record Over Goal Difference

When teams share the same points, their rankings depend first on head-to-head results. A team that beats another in the group stage ranks higher. For ties involving more than two teams, a mini-league is created considering only the matches between those tied sides. Points in these encounters determine rank, followed by goal difference and goals scored in those games. If still unresolved, overall group goal difference and goals scored are checked.

Further Tie-Breakers If Needed

If teams remain level after all previous criteria, the Team Conduct Score (TCS) is used. This fair play measure deducts points based on cards received:

  • Yellow card: -1 point
  • Red card for two yellows: -3 points
  • Straight red card: -4 points
  • Yellow plus straight red: -5 points

The team with the highest (closest to zero) TCS ranks higher. Should equality persist, FIFA rankings from June’s update decide who advances.

How Third Place Teams Advance

The best eight third-placed teams across all groups move forward, ranked primarily by points earned. If multiple teams share the same points, goal difference breaks the tie. Usually, teams with four or more points proceed comfortably, while those with three points must rely on superior goal difference to qualify.
