Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona: Julián Álvarez Transfer Saga Escalates
What began as a few cheeky posts on social media has turned into something far more serious between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
On Thursday, Atletico’s official X account let loose with a string of sarcastic messages, joking about signing Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha and even Deco. The posts were capped off with a surreal video involving a dog in a lion’s wig – the kind of content that usually screams “banter” rather than “crisis.”
Only this time, the mood behind it is anything but playful.
This is very serious
An Atletico source has spoken to Mundo Deportivo to spell out the club’s anger over Barcelona’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez and the way, in their view, the Catalan side have handled the entire situation.
“It might seem like a joke or a bit humorous, but this is very serious. We’ve been very angry with FC Barcelona for some time now. It was done ironically, to hold a mirror up to the Catalan club and show them what they’re doing,” the source said.
The complaints run deeper than one transfer rumor. Atletico are furious with the swirl of reports and the circus around their president Enrique Cerezo whenever he sets foot in Barcelona.
“The messages from Fabrizio Romano, those from the press that covers the team—like when Cerezo goes to Barcelona for lunch and they bombard him with impertinent questions about whether he’s going to negotiate with Laporta for Julián—the way they treat our players in the mixed zone…”
The source then pointed to what they see as staged theatre around the negotiations.
“They organize a dinner in Barcelona and alert El Chiringuito so they can film it, so Juanma López (a player agent and supposed mediator in this matter) is seen leaving the restaurant.”
From Atletico’s side, the picture is clear: they feel used as a prop in someone else’s show.
It’s over. We’re very angry
The frustration doesn’t stop at media tactics. Atletico insist that talk of a formal Barcelona offer for Álvarez has been exaggerated, if not outright invented.
The source added: “They leak an offer that we claim has been sent, but nothing has arrived here,” before delivering the bluntest line of the day: “It’s over. We’re very angry and this was our way of showing it.”
Those social media digs, then, were not random. They were a calculated response, a public rebuke aimed squarely at Barcelona’s approach and the narrative being built around Álvarez.
A €500 million message
Atletico have also moved to shut down the sporting angle of the saga. The stance on Julián Álvarez could not be clearer.
“Julián can’t be signed with a fixed fee, paid in installments over several seasons with some variables. It’s a €500 million cash payment that needs to be deposited at LaLiga headquarters.”
That figure is not so much a negotiation point as a “keep out” sign. Atletico are effectively telling Barcelona – and anyone else watching – that Álvarez is off limits under normal market conditions.
The message? If you want him, trigger the clause in full. Otherwise, don’t bother calling.
The social media jabs, the angry briefings, the sky-high valuation: this is no longer a quiet tug-of-war behind closed doors. The relationship between two of Spain’s biggest clubs has been dragged into open conflict.
This saga hasn’t just turned ugly. It now asks a sharper question: how far are Barcelona willing to push, and how long will Atletico keep swinging back?
