Arsenal move to raid Liverpool for teenage striker Vincent Joseph

Liverpool have grown used to raiding other English academies for the best young talent. This time, it’s their turn to feel the sting.

The club that plucked Harvey Elliott, Ben Doak, Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha from rival youth systems now stand to lose one of their own brightest prospects, with Arsenal stepping in to prise away 16-year-old striker Vincent Joseph.

Arsenal strike agreement for Joseph

According to The Athletic, Arsenal have reached an agreement with Joseph over a move to north London, with only the fee left to settle between the two clubs.

Talks are under way to agree compensation for the teenager, who did not sign scholarship terms with Liverpool this summer after his schoolboy registration expired. If Liverpool and Arsenal cannot find common ground, the matter will go to a tribunal, which would set the amount owed to the Anfield side.

That mechanism kicks in when a player under 24 leaves before signing their first professional deal, or at the end of their initial professional terms. It is familiar territory for the elite academies, and Liverpool now face being on the wrong side of it.

A prolific talent heading out of Anfield

Joseph’s numbers at youth level point to a forward with serious potential. He scored three goals in just two appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season and has been just as ruthless on the international stage, hitting eight goals in nine games for England under-16s.

That haul includes a hat-trick against the Netherlands under-16s last December, underlining why top clubs have been tracking his progress so closely.

Liverpool have moved quickly to secure other academy prospects, handing professional contracts to talents such as Lucas Clarke. With Joseph, though, they have been unable to get a deal over the line. Arsenal have stepped into that gap and now stand ready to bring him to London Colney.

Tables turned in the youth talent arms race

Liverpool know this playbook well. They used it themselves when they snatched Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea shortly after his 16th birthday, with a tribunal eventually setting the fee.

Now Arsenal are set to use the same route against them.

For Liverpool, it is the uncomfortable side of the modern academy arms race: develop, nurture, invest – and sometimes watch a rival walk away with the prize. For Arsenal, it is a calculated move for a striker whose finishing record hints at a very high ceiling.
