Arsenal Sign World-Class Full-Back Ona Batlle on Free Transfer
Arsenal have made a statement signing in the women’s game, securing Spain international Ona Batlle on a free transfer after her departure from Barcelona.
The 27-year-old full-back has signed a four-year contract in north London, with an option for a further year, in a move that underlines Arsenal’s ambition to close the gap at the very top of the European game.
From Champions League glory to a new challenge
Batlle arrives at Arsenal at the peak of her powers. Widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in world football, she leaves Barcelona having just helped them lift the Champions League in May, the latest trophy in a haul that has become almost routine.
Across three years back at Barça, she made 114 appearances as the Catalan giants swept to three successive league titles and two European crowns. She also started the 2025 Champions League final that Arsenal famously won against Barcelona, a night that now links her past and present in intriguing fashion.
Now, she crosses the divide to join the very side that denied her another European title.
“I can’t wait to feel the joy”
For Batlle, the pull of Arsenal – and the stage they offer – proved decisive.
“Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can't wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players,” she said.
“I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
It is a move that fits the arc of her career. A graduate of Barcelona’s academy, Batlle left to seek senior minutes, making her professional debut with Madrid CFF in 2017. She then established herself at Levante, earning a reputation as one of the most dynamic full-backs in Spain’s top flight.
Manchester United came calling in 2020, and Batlle used her three seasons in England to become a complete, all-action defender. She made 77 appearances for United, blending defensive steel with relentless attacking runs down the flank, before Barcelona brought her back as a fully-fledged Spain international.
A serial winner joins a club hungry for more
At international level, Batlle has already lived the highs that Arsenal are chasing. She has been capped 76 times by Spain, was part of the squad that lifted the World Cup in 2023, and then finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025.
Her consistency at the top has been recognised globally. She was named in the FIFA Best XI in both 2024 and 2025, and it is understood she signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal earlier this year to set up this summer switch.
Arsenal manager Renee Slegers did not hide her excitement.
“I'm delighted that we've been able to bring Ona to the club,” Slegers said. “She's a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She's a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”
Inside the club, the move is seen as a cornerstone signing.
Arsenal’s director of women’s football, Clare Wheatley, added: “Ona's track record at both club and international level speaks for itself. She's a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We're delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal.”
Number 22 and a new era
Batlle will wear the number 22 shirt at Arsenal, a small detail but a clear marker that a new chapter is beginning for both player and club.
She arrives as a world champion, a double European champion at club level, and a defender who has already conquered Spain and England once. Now she returns to the WSL with a different brief: not just to compete, but to tilt the balance of power.
Arsenal have their elite full-back. The question now is simple: how far can this signing push them in the battles to come, at home and across Europe?
