Arsenal's Pursuit of Bruno Guimarães and Jeremy Monga Intensifies
Arsenal have taken their first swing at prising Bruno Guimarães out of St James’ Park – and been firmly rebuffed – but the Premier League champions are not walking away from this one yet.
The London club have long admired the Brazilian, and over the last 24 hours their interest has shifted from background noise to something far more serious. With Mikel Arteta targeting a new central midfielder and a left‑sided attacker this summer, Guimarães has moved back to the top of the list.
Arsenal make their move – and hit a wall
The groundwork started quietly. Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed on Thursday that Arsenal had made what he described as an “exploratory approach” to Guimarães’ camp, mirroring similar groundwork Manchester United carried out before the window opened. At that stage, there had been no contact with Newcastle and, crucially, no indication from the Tyneside club that they were prepared to sell.
That changed when Arsenal stepped up.
Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed that Arsenal went beyond sounding out the player’s side and approached Newcastle directly. The proposal, understood to be in the region of £55m, was swiftly knocked back. Romano reported that Newcastle “closed the doors” on any deal at that figure, underlining their stance that Guimarães is not available on the cheap – if at all.
Newcastle’s message is blunt: not at that price. Arsenal’s, just as clearly, is that they are serious.
The Brazilian, for his part, is not agitating. Romano stresses that Guimarães is leaving the situation in Newcastle’s hands and respecting the club’s position, a reminder that this is a negotiation being driven from London, not by a player pushing for the exit.
£55m ‘rejected’ – and another bid coming
In Brazil, GeGlobo have gone further, describing Arsenal’s £55m move as a formal “offer rejected” by Newcastle. The same report insists Arsenal will return with an improved bid, a line that tallies with the sense from England that this was an opening shot rather than a final gambit.
Newcastle’s failure to qualify for Europe has inevitably triggered speculation around several of their key players, and Guimarães sits at the heart of that conversation. Arsenal, hunting for a midfielder who can dictate and disrupt in equal measure, see an opportunity. Newcastle, under financial pressure but determined not to be raided on their own terms, are drawing a thick line under his valuation.
Something has to give. For now, it is not Eddie Howe’s club.
Monga pursuit gathers pace
While the Guimarães chase moves into its next phase, Arsenal are pushing hard on another front.
Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga has emerged as a parallel target, and Arsenal have already seen a “cheeky” opening bid turned down. The rejection has not cooled their interest. On the contrary, Football Insider report that Arsenal are “confident of finalising a deal” for the highly rated starlet this summer.
Talks between the clubs are ongoing, with both sides keen to avoid the uncertainty of a tribunal. That shared motivation could accelerate progress. Crucially for Arsenal, Monga is understood to be willing to make the move to the Premier League champions, a stance that strengthens their hand as negotiations continue.
Two different pursuits, two very different stages.
Monga looks close, a deal waiting to be shaped. Guimarães, the proven Premier League fulcrum, sits behind a locked door that Arsenal have only just started to rattle.
How hard they are prepared to knock next will say plenty about the scale of their ambition in midfield – and about how far Newcastle are willing to go to hold their ground.
