Arsenal’s Illan Meslier Linked to Early Marseille Move Weeks After Signing

Illan Meslier Could Leave Arsenal Soon After Joining

Arsenal goalkeeper Illan Meslier, signed this summer, is already rumored to be on the move, with French club Marseille reportedly interested. The former Leeds United keeper has only featured for 45 minutes under Mikel Arteta and may not have a clear future at the Emirates Stadium.

Possible Unexpected Exit

After his arrival in July, Meslier has struggled to secure game time, positioned behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga in the pecking order. According to Foot Mercato, Marseille see him as a prime candidate to replace their departed first-choice goalie, Geronimo Rulli, who recently moved to Manchester City.

Arteta’s Summer Squad Changes

Mikel Arteta has been active in the transfer market aiming to strengthen the squad following Arsenal's Premier League title win and Champions League final loss to PSG. The club invested £75 million in Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle to fill Christian Norgaard’s spot. Yet the goalkeeper situation remains unsettled, with Meslier now third choice and unlikely to get regular starts.

Seeking Consistent Playtime

Meslier’s potential switch to Marseille could revive his playing career. Last season at Leeds, he lost his starting spot and did not appear in the Premier League, with duties shared between Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow. Marseille’s goalkeeping position is also in flux; Jeffrey De Lange started their opening match but might be leaving, creating an opening for Meslier to claim steady top-flight minutes.

Final Days of Transfer Window

As the transfer deadline nears, Arsenal must decide if letting Meslier go makes sense. While they have depth, losing an experienced goalkeeper could risk problems if injuries hit Raya or Kepa. The next few days are key in shaping Meslier’s fate, and whether he becomes part of Arsenal’s plans or moves back to Ligue 1 depends on how quickly Marseille acts.
