Arsenal's Champions League Boost with William Saliba's Inclusion

Arsenal have been handed the lift they desperately wanted in Europe – and it comes in the shape of William Saliba.

The French defender, who has yet to kick a ball this season because of a recurring back problem, has been named in Mikel Arteta’s 22-man Champions League squad. For a club still carrying the scars of last May’s final defeat, his inclusion changes the mood.

Arsenal were agonisingly close to glory in Budapest, only to lose on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain. Gabriel, Saliba’s partner at the heart of defence, sent his spot-kick over the bar as the Ligue 1 champions retained their crown. That miss has hung in the air all summer. So has the question of whether Arsenal’s defence, without Saliba, could carry them back to that stage.

Now there is at least a hint of an answer.

Saliba has not featured this term after his back issue flared up again, the same problem he pushed through last season. During the World Cup he admitted he had been playing through pain for Arsenal as they chased a first Premier League title in 22 years. He still anchored their run to the Champions League final, underlining how central he has become to Arteta’s plans.

There is still no confirmed date for his return to the pitch. But being registered for the league phase is a clear signal: Arsenal expect him to play a part. The dressing room knows it. So do the fans.

Arteta and the recruitment team have not waited around in his absence. Arsenal dipped into the market to bring in Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51million, bolstering the centre-back options and easing the strain on a back line that has already had to adapt. Cristhian Mosquera has stepped in and performed solidly in the No2’s absence, but the hierarchy always saw the need for another top-level defender if they wanted to compete on all fronts.

The European squad tells its own story of a club arming itself for another deep run. New signings Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Ilan Meslier and Konsa are all included, each one a piece of a broader rebuild aimed at turning near-miss into silverware. Jurrien Timber also makes the list, despite his stop-start recovery from a persistent groin issue that has stalled his momentum since arriving in north London.

The memory of Budapest still stings. Arsenal have stocked up, patched up and reshaped. With Saliba’s name back on a Champions League team sheet, the question now is simple: can this group finally turn promise into a trophy?
