Arsenal Close in on Bruno Guimaraes for Title Defence

Arsenal are on the brink of landing Bruno Guimaraes in a deal that underlines exactly where the Premier League champions now see themselves.

The Gunners have agreed a fee with Newcastle for the Brazil midfielder worth around £75million, rising towards £80m with add-ons. For a player who only arrived back from a post-World Cup holiday on Monday to rejoin Newcastle’s pre-season camp in Spain, the turnaround has been ruthless. He is expected to leave that camp and return to England to complete his medical and finalise the move.

Guimaraes has agreed a four-year contract running until the summer of 2030 and has already spoken with new manager Mikel Arteta. The club may have changed coach, but the transfer ambition has not dipped.

Arteta, though, refused to be drawn into any public victory lap after Wednesday night’s 3-1 friendly defeat by Real Betis in Dublin. Asked directly how big a boost Guimaraes would be, he shut the door.

“I'm not going to talk about any players who aren't Arsenal players,” he said, holding the line.

Pressed again on the impact of signing a player of Guimaraes’ calibre, he offered only: “Well, I can tell you at the moment that something happens and we can announce it. I will give you my straight answer.”

For now, the straight answer is this: Arsenal are building with the authority of champions.

Guimaraes will become their fourth signing of the summer window. Greek winger Christos Tzolis has already arrived from Club Brugge in a £34m move, adding direct running and goals from wide. Goalkeeper Illan Meslier joined on a free transfer after leaving Leeds, bolstering competition in a key position. The club also exercised their option on Ecuador international Piero Hincapie, turning his loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent deal worth around £34.5m.

That is a spine being reinforced, not merely decorated.

And still, Arsenal are looking higher.

The club are ready to test the waters for another Brazil superstar: Vinicius Jr. Any move for the Real Madrid forward would be the most audacious transfer in Arsenal’s history, a statement aimed not just at England but at Europe. Vinicius has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Bernabeu, a sliver of opportunity that the champions are keenly aware of.

Madrid, though, have moved to close that gap. Crunch talks on Wednesday between the Spanish club and the player’s representatives are understood to have gone well, with the LaLiga giants and head coach Jose Mourinho now confident that Vinicius will sign a lucrative extension to stay in the Spanish capital.

Arsenal can dream, but Madrid still hold the strongest hand.

Inside the Gunners’ dressing room, the message is clear: this is the level they want to live at. Defender Riccardo Calafiori, speaking after the Betis defeat, made no attempt to play down the scale of the targets.

“We are on that level now. We are on top,” the Italian said in Dublin. “We want to win the league again and we want to be even better than last season if we can. We need these kind of players, I think.”

Guimaraes, almost in the door. Vinicius, still a distant shot. Arsenal, spending and talking like a team determined not to let their title be a one-off.
