Ruben Amorim Acknowledges AC Milan Didn't Earn Win as Late Juventus Equalizer Denies Rossoneri Victory
Amorim Admits AC Milan Fell Short in Turin
Ruben Amorim, head coach of AC Milan, openly recognized that his team did not deserve the full three points after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Juventus at the Allianz Stadium. The draw ended Milan's flawless start to the Serie A season, as Federico Gatti scored a stoppage-time header to cancel out Alphadjo Cisse's goal for the visitors.
Late Header Ends Milan's Winning Streak
The Rossoneri had taken the lead against the flow of play when substitute Cisse found the net with a composed shot slipping through Pierre Kalulu’s legs. Despite holding onto their advantage for most of the match, Milan's defense finally cracked deep into stoppage time when Gatti connected with Teun Koopmeiners' cross to level the score.
Portuguese Coach Shows Honesty About Performance
Speaking after the match on DAZN Italia, Amorim was forthright about his team's struggles under pressure from Juventus. He said,
"We didn't deserve to win, if we are honest, or more like Juventus didn't deserve to lose. We tried to play our game, but we were not good with the ball. We had moments controlling the game in the first half, but then lost possession too often and didn’t play well. We've been working together for two months; we need to improve, but it was a tough game for us."
Breaking a Goal Drought but Exposing Weaknesses
Cisse’s strike ended Milan’s Serie A goal drought against Juventus dating back to May 2023 and made him the youngest player to score in his first two away matches during the current points system era.
Amorim highlighted fundamental flaws, especially in possession, stating,
"We have individual quality, but simple things like receiving and passing the ball properly matter most, and today we weren’t good at those basics. When we don’t have the ball, we struggle. Juventus deployed many attackers, and while we defended well, we suffered more during transitions after losing possession."
He added that Milan would stick to their style despite ups and downs, emphasizing the importance of fighting to win. "We could have won today, but Juventus didn’t deserve to lose either," he said.
Upcoming Challenges and Priorities
Milan must address their ball control and transition play quickly ahead of a tough trip to Lazio on September 12. Meanwhile, Juventus, coached by Luciano Spalletti, face Sassuolo the following day as they aim to stay near the top of the table.
- Serie A Fixture: Lazio vs AC Milan – 12 Sept 2026, 19:00
- Serie A Fixture: Sassuolo vs Juventus – 13 Sept 2026, 21:45
Fixing these basic errors remains Amorim’s immediate focus to keep AC Milan competitive in the title race.
